back in the groove

Enzo slept in a little bit this morning because we weren't able to put him to sleep until 9:45PM last night. He's still on Hawaii time. It was too late to take the dogs to the Rose Bowl so we just stayed home, read some books, and ate some breakfast that Zoe made. He was a little out of sorts most of the morning, and I think continuing on when Alex arrived. Must be so confusing to him to all of a sudden be back home.

Nanny Note: We read books and played outside. Enzo had a long nap and afterwards we had lunch and watched Sesame Street. We went to play at the park for a while, then took a walk.

Zoe got home first and was playing in the front yard when I got home. Enzo was pretty fussy early in the evening. Trying to take what would be his afternoon nap if we were still on Hawaii time, but we wanthim back on his regular schedule so we powered through. We let him watch a DVD to calm him down, and I took him on a quick walk. Zoe made him a beautiful dinner, but he was too worked up to eat much. He really started to get upset, so I took him on a walk with the dogs. We stopped by our neighbors house to playin the sandbox with Wes, which seemed to cheer him up. Zoe came over for a minute too to drop off a gift.

Back home, Enzo was in a much better mood. Zoe fed him some fruit, and then he got a nice long bath with all his old toys. After some books with mommy and a good toth brushing, he was ready for bed right at 8:PM. He should be back on track tomorrow.

July 27, 2007

cabana boy

Up early again and back to Kalaheo Cafe again for a yummy breakfast of island fruit and french toast. After breakfast, we stopped in Big Save to pick up supplies for the day.

We walked to the hotel beach when we got back to claim our rented cabana. For the next couple hours, we just laid around, played in the sand, and dipped our toes in the ocean. I took Enzo back to the room around 10:AM for a nap, and laid down for a bit myself. Zoe came by about an hour later to wake us up so she could take off to meet her friends at the spa.

Enzo and I went back to the cabana and hung out for about four hours. We played on the beach, swam in the pool, went for a walk, and got lunch in the cabana. Enzo drank POG for the first time and loved it. I also told Enzo his life story, which took a very long time because he's such a big boy now. He laughed at the Billy Ruben part, even though I told him it wasn't funny at the time.

Soon after mommy returned, it was time for Enzo to take another nap back in the room. Mommy and daddy also took a nap.

After nap, we headed to Lihue to visit Sam & Robin. They live right on a golf course, so I got to play nine holes of twilight golf with Sam, which was great. We got back to the hotel in time for some late room service for dinner. After bath, Enzo watched a couple minutes of Nemo, and then crashed.

July 26, 2007

hot

Enzo woke up at 4:30AM and after his morning milk curled up with mommy in bed and slept a couple more hours. We went to Kalaheo Cafe for breakfast, which is just a few minute from Poipu. Enzo loved his papaya and his fruity coconut smoothie. On the way back to the hotel, we stopped by a local market to buy some supplies. Enzo got his first spam musubi, which he loved.

We went to the small pool near our room again. The little pool was cold, so we went in the big pool. Enzo was so happy to be in the water. He's very buoyant, especially his chubby legs. He walks out to a certain depth and his legs just float up to the surface. He went down for his usual 10:AM nap back in the room.

Milestones: Enzo started saying "hot" today. Anything he touches that is different than the ambient temperature, cold or hot, he says "hot". Was so cute about it is how well he enunciates. He first said it when he walked out on to the sunny hotel baloney and stepped on the warm concrete.

After nap, we went to a fish market to pick up lunch. It was so good, and brought back a lot of memories. We sat in the parking lot in the back of our truck while we ate. Zoe grabbed a shave ice also.

We drove over to Shipwreck's Beach, but the sand was too "hot" and the waves to big, so we backtracked to Poipu Beach, which was perfect for swimming. Enzo and I floated around the lagoon while mommy got some sun. Enzo even got to see a monk seal resting on the beach.

We went for a walk down the beach back at the hotel, and reserved a cabana for tomorrow. Enzo took a late from which we had to wake him in order to make our dinner reservations at Roy's.

Enzo wasn't too interested in sitting for dinner, but fortunately there was a big lawn in the center of the mall complex which Enzo spent most of meal running around in. Zoe and I switched on and off, eating our dinner and watching Enzo flame around.

We walked back to the hotel beach after the sun went down, and then spent some time rolling around in the big hotel lawn by the water. When I laid on my back, Enzo would climb on top of me and try to stand up, like standing on a surfboard. It was very sweet.

Enzo took his usual bath and went down no problem at about his usual bedtime. We can't believe how well he's sleeping in the new crib and strange surroundings.

July 25, 2007

three tickets

Up and off early to LAX on our way to Kauai this morning. Found parking close to the airport. Enzo liked riding in the shuttle bus without being in a car seat. Check was easy, and we let Enzo run free in the terminal to try to burn off some energy before the flight.

We started to give Enzo a few of his 99 cent store toys soon into the flight, which he really enjoyed. The big hits were the gorilla and the magnetic drawing board. He took a short nap in Zoe's lap pretty early in the flight, and then wanted to walk in the aisle. We calmed him with some Monsters Inc on the laptop.

He really started to get antsy and tired about 3 hours into the flight, but we couldn't get him to sleep which was unfortunate. He proceeded to have about a 30 minute meltdown. There was really nothing to do but hold on to him and let him cry and wriggle. Mercifully, he gave in and fell asleep again. Zoe made me offer everyone around us a cocktail when we first got on the plane, and I think they were wishing then they had accepted.

He was a little out of sorts when he woke up an hour later, but he hung in there until the we got to Honolulu, about a 5.5 hour flight. During the two hour layover in Honolulu, he ran around the terminal, ate a $7 hot dog, and shared an ice cream with mommy.

We arrived on Kauai around 4:30PM. The minute we go to the hotel, we went to the pool. Enzo was so happy to be in the water. The kiddie pool was just shallow enough for him to stand, which he thought was great. We got room service for dinner, then walked down to explore the beach in front of the hotel. Enzo does love the beach.

He went to sleep with no problem around 8:PM Hawaii time in the nice crib the hotel had waiting in our room.

July 23, 2007

drizzle

A very rare rainy summer morning. It hasn't rained a drop in probably three months. So unfortunately no fetch with the puppies this AM. Instead we had an early family breakfast of yummy pancakes, and then took the dogs for a quick walk in the drizzle. We also had to dig out a splinter from Enzo's heel, which upset him a lot.

Nanny Note: We read books, watched Corduroy and played. After nap we went to buy some toys for the trip. We had a small lunch when we got back then since we were so hot we played with water for a while. Once we cooled down, we came in to read books and have a snack. We took a walk later in the afternoon when it wasn't so hot and Enzo fell asleep at the bottom of the hill on the way home.

Zoe is on call tonight, so after work Enzo and I walked up to bug our neighbors. Enzo and Wes hung out in her room and the living room playing together. They scribbled on paper with colored pencils and ate some snap pea crunchies. Enzo and I had our usual Peruvian take out. He did OK, but not great. Enzo did drink from a regular big boy cup tonight though. He was silly at dinner tonight. I kept making faces when he reached his greasy, sticky food covered hands toward me, and he thought that was great. He also does this funny thing now when you sing the train song. When you get to the line "what a lot of noise it makes", he covers both ears with his hands.

We took the girls on the usual family walk. We had a late bath, followed by a few books, and then bed.

July 22, 2007

pugs

Breakfast on the run this morning en route to the dog park with the girls. Enzo got knocked over by some obnoxious pugs and Betty started obsessing about someone else's frisbee so it was not a long stay, but the girls had fun.

Came home and took Enzo to the park to run off some energy, then ran more errands, then home for a good morning nap. The nap was cut short because Mr was locked in Enzo's room with him and let us know it by yowling loudly. So rude!

We had a mish mash of random foods for lunch, then Wesly came over to try to get some pool time with Enzo but he was slightly feverish and more than slightly cranky. We ran more errands, including buying Enzo some sunglasses for Hawaii, and came home to try to put him down for a nap but no go.

Wesly and Christa came over again and we went for a walk and checked out an open house in the neighborhood. Enzo fell asleep in the stroller on the way home. Had a nice dinner with Karen and JJ and Enzo charmed the pants off them, showing off all his new tricks. Easy bath, books, and bed after.

July 21, 2007

a.o.c.

Usual morning at Peet's for breakfast, then off to Gymboree, where we hung out with Eliza and her mom. We stopped at a local toy store and mommy and daddy stocked up on assorted little toys and stickers to keep Enzo occupied on the plane trip.

We came home for a good nap, then had lunch at home. After lunch we went into town where mommy got a haircut while daddy and Enzo walked around Old Pasadena. He took a nippy nap in the stroller which was clearly not enough because he was super cranky later when Wesley and her parents came over for a dip in the pool.

We had to break the "no nap after 5pm" rule and Enzo and daddy slept on the upstairs rocker together. He had a decent dinner after he woke up, then Alex came over to babysit while mommy and daddy went out to AOC with Karen and JJ.

When we got home from our rare night out, we were worried about how bad Enzo was with Alex, but she said that he was very easy and had a good night. Karen and JJ are going to Paris in February, and we are hoping to be able to meet them there. We invited Alex to come with us, and she was very excited.

July 20, 2007

grumpy bird

Zoe had the morning off today. After morning milk, we ran out to VW to drop off my car and then to DDC to drop off the dogs for the day. We attempted breakfast at Peets, but Enzo was much more interested in running around than eating. We stopped by Garfield Park, which was great. Alex takes him there sometimes, but we'd never been there with him before.

Back home, Enzo went down a good morning nap. Before Zoe had to head into work, we ran back out to get the wagon, and then I took Enzo to lunch. Wes and Owen met us there with their parents. We'd already just about finished our meal when they got there, but Enzo stayed in his chair for another 45 minutes while they ate. He also continued to eat the whole time. I finally cut him off. He spent the next 15 minutes walking around staring at people and waving to them too.

We went back home and laid around on the couch, reading books and playing with toys. Mommy came home just before I put him down for another nap. I ran out to get the dogs, and while I was gone Grumpy Bird woke up in sour mood. He'd finally calmed down when we returned, and I took him around the block in the pack.

After dinner, Enzo spend some time playing frisbee with dogs in the backyard. Every time he bent down to pick up the frisbee, one of the dogs would jump up and yank it out of his hand and then shake it around. He thought that was great.

We went on our family walk, and then the usual countdown to bedtime.

July 19, 2007

girlfriends

Enzo was in a good mood this morning, and we had a nice long morning milk snuggle on the couch. We stopped by the store on the way to play fetch because daddy realized there were no diapers in the house. It was a beautiful morning and we spend about an hour with the dogs. Enzo was walking and trying to run all over the field. I let him walk pretty far away from me a few times, which he thought was very exciting. We got back to the house and had a quick breakfast of fruit and yogurt before Alex showed up. He was happy to see her as usual.

Nanny Note: We went to Gymboree and we played with water. Enzo went down for a nap just fine and woke up in a very good mood.

Zoe had the day off because she was on call last night, so we went to breakfast and ran errands to get ready for our trip to Kauai next week. We got this awesome car seat thing for the plane that is going to save our lives. We headed home mid-afternoon and let Alex go home. We played some music for him (and he did his little backward jig), read some books, and watched some Nemo. Enzo wanted nothing to do with an afternoon nap today, so I took him on a short walk and he fell asleep for 15 minutes or so.

We went to the Thursday market as per usual. Enzo saw all three of his girlfriends there tonight. Our neighbors sat with us and we all took turns eating and chasing the kids around. Enzo walked all the way to the other side of the market by himself tonight. He also ate a nice big meal.

Back home, I took Enzo and girls for the family walk while Zoe rested. After walk, he had a nice bath, some books, and then bed. He didn't fall asleep right away, so cried for a few minutes after I put him the crib. He has to get used to going to bed before he's sound asleep, so good practice.

July 18, 2007

loma saltado

Morning milk and snuggling with Zoe and then fetch with dad and puppies. We came home to a beautiful silver dollar pancake breakfast, which Enzo enjoyed and shared with the dogs. Zoe and I always make sure to kiss goodbye in front of Enzo, because he gets a kick out it. Today, he was pushing the back of my head in an effort to make us kiss again and again. Big smile and giggle each time.

Nanny Note: We read books, played outside and played with playdough. We went to Gymboree after nap, the theme was circle. He was in a good mood at Gymboree but here at the house he was easily frustrated, maybe he was just tired and hungry....he didn't eat much at lunch time. After lunch we played with chalk for a long time and watched 1/2 of Sesame Street then he went down for a short nap at 2:45. He woke up crying for some reason so we went out to play with water and he was much happier.

Zoe is on call tonight, so Enzo and I went up to bug the neighbors after Alex went home. Wes and her little friend Owen were both there, so Enzo got in an hour of playtime with them. He's still not quite playing with other kids directly, more like parallel play. He had lots of fun though exploring Wes' room and her book selection. He found another great book by Taro Gomi that I think he might need to have.

We ate our usual call night loma saltado, beans & rice, and plantains. Enzo was in a great mood at dinner and happily sat for about 30 minutes munching away. He followed dinner with a big bowl of $13 watermelon (no popsicle because mommy isn't home). We took the dogs out on the family walk route after dinner. Back home, we played in the front yard, took a long bath, and then read a pile of books before bed @ 8:30PM.

July 17, 2007

so stinky

Enzo was up early this morning, so had plenty of time for morning snuggling with mommy and fetch with the dogs with daddy. We had waffles waiting for us, and Enzo sat with Zoe and ate his breakfast.

Nanny Note: We played with blocks, took a walk around the neighborhood, listened to music, and watched Where The Wild Things Are. After nap we had lunch, played outside, played with water and then we went to Lakeshore to get Playdough. We got scented Playdough and we had fun squishing and pounding and poking it. After that we watched Sesame Street. We took a ride in his red car, played in the yard and played with Playdough again.

After work, I hung with Enzo at the house, and did some reading. At one point, I took his shoe off, held it up to my nose, sniffed, and said "soooo stinky". He laughed at that for the first 30 times I said it. Zoe ran tot he grocery, and I took Enzo around the block to see Wes. She screamed and ran toward Enzo when she saw him. He turned and ran the other direction.

Enzo loooooved Zoe's pancetta pasta tonight. He sat and ate with such focus. After dinner, we went on a nice family walk. For some reason mommy got so many kisses along the way from Enzo. He started to get zoned out during the walk and was ready for bath right when we got home. A quick bath and then straight to bed. No afternoon nap today.

July 16, 2007

progressive ed

Usual morning of milk and super snuggling with the man. Usual Rose bowl shennainigans with the girls, then home for breakfast with mommy because she did not have to go in early today. Enzo ate a "cream pan" - a Japanese bread filled with custard that Zoe used to eat as a kid - found at the Japanese market this weekend. Ralph enjoyed one as well. Also had fruit and a scrambled egg with broccoli and sausage.

Daddy took a field trip to Pacific Oaks School today and they LOVED Dee's books with the inscriptions. Hopefully we will be scheduling a reading by Dee one of these days.

Nanny Note: We played with toys, went to KidSpace and the park. We played with water at the water table, took a walk through the garden, played with the indoor playroom and played on the climbing structure at the park. Enzo loves the steering wheels. Enzo woke up in a good mood and had a blast at lunch pounding on the table and making a mess with his food. After lunch we went out to play with water. Enzo played with the hose and I put dish soap in the water table to add a new element to his water play. Enzo rode around in his red car and we took a long walk. When we got home, we read books and listened to music.

After work, Enzo was in a great mood as was Alex. We can usually gauge how Enzo's day was by what Alex's mood is at the end of the day. We hung out in the lounge and daddy took everyone for a walk while mommy got dinner ready. The Metcalfs came over for a dinner of ribs, salad, fries and cornbread. Enzo and Luke ate a lot while screeching at each other from across the table. Gabe did not eat much but was entertaining us with the USC fight song.

Usual bath, books, then bed. A good day for the little monkey.

R.I.P. Cindy's
Apparently sometime over the weekend, someone missed the turn in the road, hopped the curb, and drove a car right into Enzo's favorite breakfast place, Cindy's Diner. Look like they drove straight over the last booth we sat in. Looks like we'll have to find another place to get dollar pancakes.

July 15, 2007

pony boy

After morning milk and a good long snuggle with Zoe, we packed up Enzo and headed out to breakfast at Peets. Enzo was running all over the place, stopping by the table for an occasional bite. We then drove out to Studio City to the farmers market. Enzo rode a pony, which actually went pretty well. He was the youngest kid there (someone actually stopped Ralph to ask incredulously, "how old is that kid?" We also stopped in the petting zoo. We discovered that Enzo likes ducks, but not rabbits.

We were supposed to visit Cheri and Jack and take a swim in their pool but Enzo fell asleep after the market in the car, so we decided to postpone the pool visit for another day. We extended his nap by driving into downtown to go the Japanese market. The ticket thing at the parking lot entrance woke him. He wasn't happy about that, but ended up having fun in the store. Back home we had lunch and played in the wading pool. He has gotten himself dunked in the pool a couple of times and always gets up out of the water with a totally shocked expression on his face. He is not that fond of getting his face wet. Enzo only had a 20 minute morning nap (his usual is 90 - 120 minutes) but he was inexplicably in a great mood and ate a ton of food sitting at his table in the breakfast nook, laughing his head off with his mouth full.

We went out again to run some errands. Enzo latched on the this little broom at the gardening store, so now we own it. We thought about trying to find a wooden train set for Enzo, but couldn't find exactly what we were looking for. Enzo took a nice long nap when we got home, and Zoe and I worked on dinner. We made a nice big salad filled with the fresh stuff we got at the market.

When Enzo woke up, I took him for a walk while Zoe ran to the grocery store again. We stopped by the neighbors to play with Wes and to invite Eric over for dinner. He's got the baby for a few days by himself. They came over and we all enjoyed our dinner and some front yard rumpusing. Enzo and Wesley had their usual mind meld thing going on. They talk to each other across the table, imitate each other, try to out do the other's screeching and screaming. Its very cute to see Enzo interact with another little person. Wesley is a really cute kid, very smiley and full of personality.

After an early bath, Enzo and mommy snuggled some more and read some bedtime stories.

July 14, 2007

nemo

We got an early breakfast at Cindy's this morning before heading over to Peets for coffee. Enzo had so much fun at Gymboree this morning. He was all over the place. He's really starting to run which is scary.

I started to not feeling so well during Gymboree, and by the time we got home it was pretty clear I had food poisoning. Ugh. After putting Enzo down for his nap, I laid down for a while, and felt better.

After nap we had some lunch at filled up the pool in the front yard for Enzo. He loves the pool. We dried him off and went to the book store. So hot today, so we were happy in be in the AC. We found two new books for Enzer. He was pretty nuts at the store, running all over the place yanking books off the shelf. At one point he was carrying around a life-sized stuffed emperor penguin.

Back home for a failed nap attempt. I took Enzo for a long walk and he got in a nippy nap. Headed off to the grocery store. It was fun, except that daddy accidentally bought a $13 organic watermelon. We'd planned to cook diner, but it was getting late, so we stopped on the way home for a bite.

We played more in the front yard, and had Betty and Harriet jumping in and out of the swimming pool. Enzo was laughing harder than he's ever laughed. He got an early bath, and a little bit of Finding Nemo before reading with mommy. He wasn't really ready for bed when I put him down because of his late nap, but he drifted off eventually.

July 13, 2007

do a jig

Enzo woke up in a good mood, had some milk and the usual morning snuggle with mommy. He was very interested in a morning snuggle with Betty, who was not that interested. Enzo was kind enough to bring the dogs to doggy day care. Usual stop at Starbucks afterwards for a croissant to munch on the way home. Mommy left for work early, but left a smoothie in the blender as well as fruit and pancakes.

Nanny Note: We read books, watched A Big Big World on PBS and ate a snack. After nap we went out to lunch with Nathan. Enzo has been in a great mood all day. He used the sign for thank you today. When we got home we read books and played with toys. We played with water and took a walk after nap.

We had Tahi take out tonight with Wesley and her dad. Enzo is so good about sitting in his chair during dinner whenever there are other kids around - he sits transfixed by the other kid and eats bite after bite. He and Wes were eyeballing one another from across the table, pointing to each other and talking to each other. After a great meal of pad thai, pad woon sen, and mango sticky rice, we played in the front yard again. Enzo has started doing a funny little dance where he sticks his gut way out, sort of shuffles and steps in place then steps backwards. Must be something he's learned in Gymboree. He seemed to think it was hilarious tonight.

Usual bath, then books, then bed. Looking forward to a good weekend with the man.

July 12, 2007

grassy ass

Enzo was in one of those moods this morning where he just cried for seemingly no reason for about 15 minutes. Probably because he got his morning milk and snuggle from dad today. We ventured out with the dogs anyway, and Enzo sorted it out on his own eventually. The soccer field had just been mowed and there was cut grass everywhere. Enzo had it on his hands, in his hair, in his bowl of fruit, in his mouth, and stuck all over his butt. I noticed he was having trouble walking, and realized he had about an inch of grass clippings pancaked to the treads of his crocs. Back home, we sat in the back of the wagon with the hatch open while we ate breakfast and watched the guys working on the street in front of the house. One guy walked by with his dog, and said "tailgate party!"

Nanny Note: We went to Gymboree this morning. Enzo has really come out of his shell. He knows all the movements to the songs and especially the walking song with the rainbow rope. He used to refuse to do it and now he knows just what to do and he loves doing it before anyone else. After nap we went to my parents house to play with the kitten and eat lunch. When we got home we watched Good Night Gorilla.

We let Alex go a little early today, and headed over to the farmers market. We didn't stay too long, but Enzo had fun walking around eyeballing people and trying to play with some other kids wagon. Back home, I took Enzo and girls for a walk. We stopped by to see Wes who was just back from a photo shoot in Portland. She and Enzo played in the empty pool and then in her room. Enzo liked her wooden whale.

We played in the front yard with mommy for a bit, and then got an early bath. Enzo got about 45 minutes of bedtime stories from Zoe tonight.

July 11, 2007

almost everything

Enzo had fun running around on the soccer field this morning as per usual. We got back to the house just in time to see mommy before she left. Enzo enjoyed his breakfast that was waiting for him. Lucky boy.

Nanny Note: We read books, played with chalk, walked around and explored. After nap we went to Gymboree and then had lunch. After lunch, we played outside in the little pool. I gave Enzo a popsicle to eat and boy did he enjoy that, I had to rinse him off after. We came inside after that and got dressed and watched Where the Wild Things Are and read books. I tried to put him down for another nap but he wasn't ready so we took a walk and he slept for a bit.

Zoe is on call tonight, so Enzo and I ate some cuban take-out. He loved his beans and rice and plantains, among other things including tomatoes. He was pretty focused during dinner and sat for about 20 minutes eating away before he started unloading food over the side of the tray for Betty waiting below. I strung him out for a bit longer with some chunks of watermelon for dessert. We took the girls for the nightly family walk, although not the same without mommy.

Back at the house, we played in the front yard and then inside, and read some books. Enzo took a nice long bath. He never gets tired of the stickers from I'm the Biggest Thing in the Ocean. We read some bedtime stories, and looked through his new big book, Almost Everything, which is pretty great. He went to bed right on time and without any trouble. Good bug.

July 10, 2007

bruiser

After morning milk and snuggling with mommy, Enzo and I went to the soccer fields to play with the dogs. I let Enzo run loose, while I threw the ball. He had fun. Didn't eat much at all for breakfast when we got home.

Nanny Note: We read books played with chalk and took a stroll around the neighborhood. On our walk met a couple of puppies and Enzo attempted to walk up a steep grassy hill. He got 1/2 way then tumbled down. We laughed. I started teaching Enzo the signs for "help" and "blanket" and "again". After nap we read more books, ate lunch and played with chalk again. We watched Where the Wild Things Are and went to Kidspace to play. We played in the construction zone and at the park.

After work, we played with Enzo in the front yard, and took him around the block in his car. He was not so in to dinner, so spent dinnertime running around the back yard chasing Betty. As we were getting ready to go on family family walk, Enzo stumbled while chasing the dogs around. Edge of door jam meets forehead. Ouch. And a big bruise and bump. Took some time for us all to settle down, but he was OK after a fruit popsicle with Zoe. He wouldn't let us put ice on it, so it swelled up pretty good. We still had a nice walk, and bath, and story time.

July 09, 2007

chalk talk

Enzo was up very early this morning. Zoe had to leave early for work, so the man and I went to the Rose Bowl with the dogs. After fetch, we had enough time to head down to Cindy's for pancakes and peaches. Enzo signed for "more" peaches again and again.

Milestones: Enzo started using the signs for "yes" and "book" today.

Nanny Note: We read books, played outside, colored with crayons and watched Goodnight Gorilla. After nap we had lunch. Everything in our lunch started with the letter C and almost all of the things were orange so we got to talk about the letter C and the color orange. Enzo used the sign for "more" and "yes" today. We walked down the street to watch the tree trimmers and then we played in the yard with toys. We sang Put Your Froggie On while we played with frog stickers. We took a walk and he fell asleep for awhile. When we got home we played with bubbles.

After work today, Enzo was kind of a crank. He had fun drawing on the driveway with his new sidewalk chalk, but was upset when we had to stop for dinner. He was just in one of those moods where he just wanted what he wanted and that was that. Trouble is that half the time it's kind of impossible to know what he wants. He settled down after dinner during our family walk. And we had a good bath and story time.

July 08, 2007

dog beach

Enzo woke up earlier than usual this morning but was pretty cheery. Mommy had to go to the hospital to round on her patient, so daddy made a lovely breakfast that Enzo did not eat too much of.

Later we all made a trek to Dog Beach, about an hour away. Harriet and Betty and Enzo all had a great time, but when we spied several dogs taking giant poops while their owners conveniently were looking out at the ocean, we decided it was time to leave. It would be just like Enzo to toddle over to one of those land mines and try to scoop it up into his bucket. We managed to keep him awake on the ride home so he would take a proper nap in his crib.

After nap, we ran some errands and hung out in the front yard. Daddy rearranged a flower bed and laid a bunch of soft woodchips and put the picnic table over it so that Enzo would have a nice spot to eat his lunch with Alex.

Enzo was very good today about consistently signing "more" whenever he was eating something he wanted more of. He is getting better and better every day with his communication skills - really amazing to see that develop. His big trick today was when Ralph was looking at a picture book of animals with him - he pointed to a picture of a gorilla, then started thumping his chest. We taught him to "thump his chest like a gorilla" a while ago (a line out of an Eric Carle book) - up until now we had no idea that he actually knew what the hell he was doing. Clever kid.

Afterwards it was a usual lazy Sunday afternoon - mommy made dinner, we had some front yard hijinks, then dinner. We had a nice family walk where we ran into another kid in the neighborhood who is 3 or 4 days older than Enzo but literally half his size. A fun bath, then books, then off a to an early bedtime.

July 07, 2007

more, please

After morning milk, Enzo and I went to Peets for pre-gymbo breakfast. Enzo enjoyed his hot dog bagel. Mommy met us at Gymboree, after the hardest call she has had in awhile. She had to operate on a 450# woman with a 30 x 30 inch mass. She was exhausted. Enzo was happy to see her at Gymboree and showed off his new dunking and ball kicking skills. He flirted with two of his girlfriends ,Sophia and Eliza. Good thing Wesley wasn't there too. That would have really been awkward for him.

Milestones: Enzo used the hand sign for "more" tonight for the first time. He also said "book" and "Betty" (He loves words that start with "B".) His fourth bottom front tooth is also finally coming in.

After Gymboree he took a nice nap while daddy went to the driving range to hit some golf balls. Enzo woke up in a good mood. We went to the Valley for lunch and walked around and did some book shopping at Storyopolis. Enzo latched on to a stuffed Knuffle Bunny. Once we got home, Enzo took another short nap. When he woke up, we hung out in the front yard and Enzo had a good snack of fruit and yogurt. We rallied and left to do some grocery shopping, get some supplies at the gardening shop, then get takeout for dinner.

Enzo loved his Korean noodles and beefy rice, but managed to jam himself in the lip at the exact spot that he split open yesterday, so Zoe shared a popsicle with him. After every bite, she said, "more, please" - trying to get him to say that. He quietly put down his truck, and started signing "more". We were amazed...and he kept doing it, after every bite. Alex must have been teaching him, because the last time we did that with him was probably 4 months ago.

After a great dinner, we went on a family walk, then a fun bath, then lots of books, then bed.

fat lip

Enzo and I ran the dogs out the DDC this morning and stopped for our usual coffee and croissant. Some guy in line was telling me his 37 yo son has a 12 yo kid. And about how fast they grow up, etc.. The whole time I'm thinking this guy doesn't look a day over 60. When Enzo is 37, I'll be nearly 80. Ugh.

Zoe had breakfast waiting for us, and Enzo and I ate at the new nook table. He didn't eat much but it was still nice.

Nanny Note: Enzo's teeth were bothering him this morning so he was not interested in paying so we watched Good Night Gorilla and that seemed to distract him for a while. I gave Enzo Tylenol at noon. He woke up in an OK mood but he started to whine about things he wanted to touch or see. At lunch I tried to get him to eat french fries and a corn dog but he just made a mess out of them. After lunch we went to Peek-a-Boo.

Enzo went down for another nap at 3:PM, so I let Alex go home early. Zoe on call tonight.

Enzo and I had such a fun night. First we we drove out to pick up the dogs. Then Enzo helped me put together his new picnic table for the front yard. He wasn't much help actually. Mainly interested in dropping the drill on my feet, biting the alan wrench, and trying to take screws from the bag. We got the table together and he really loves it.

Enzo had a HUGE dinner of mac & cheese, salmon, peas and avocado sitting at the picnic table. We sat there for about 30 minutes just munching away. After dinner Enzo had a fruit smoothie of mangoes, peaches, berries and OJ. Right after his smoothie, he bumped his lip on the edge of the picnic table seat. He cried for a couple minutes, but was pretty tough about it. Zoe called and had the good idea to give him a popsicle to keep the swelling down. He was very happy about the popsicle. And he didn't pay much attention to his lip for the rest of the night.

We went for our family walk, and then came back for bath. Enzo was really silly in the bath tonight. He splashed and splashed, over and over, for about 10 minutes. I made a face every time he got me wet, and that was very funny apparently. We sat and read books for about 45 minutes until 8:30PM, and then it was finally time for bed.

eliza

I let Enzo run around at the soccer fields this morning instead of keeping him in the backpack. He had so much fun toddling around with his golf club, hitting the ball, and laughing at the dogs running through the giant sprinklers.

Nanny Note: We went to Gymboree. Enzo woke up from his nap in a grumpy mood. I think his teeth were bothering him so I gave him Tylenol and let him drink his milk from nap. He ate a small lunch then we played in the pool and went for a short walk. We went back to Gymboree to play at 3:PM.

Zoe and I met at IKEA and picked up a small breakfast nook table for the kitchen. It will be a perfect spot for us to eat quick meals with Enzo. We also picked up a couple other things for Enzo's room which we're finally going to put together. After a snack, we headed out to the farmers market to eat some dinner and meet the Metcalfs. Enzo had a nice time walking around saying hello to people. And he got to spend some time with his other little girlfriend, Eliza.

Enzo's been saying "harriet"all day today.

4th

Bright and early family trip to Laurel Canyon dog park before breakfast this morning. The dog park was kind of disaster. A few out of control big dogs with lame owners that we hassling B&H, and a big deep mud puddle that Harriet kept curling up in. The dogs were a mess when we left.

Zoe made some great waffles this morning with fresh fruit and whipped cream that Enzo and I thoroughly enjoyed. After breakfast we blew up the new swimming pool in the front yard, and played in that for a good long time before morning nap.

Milestones: During breakfast, Enzo pretty clearly said "Harriet" when Zoe pointed at Harriet and asked Enzo, "Who's that?".

We had lunch after nap and then went out to run a couple errands. I managed to bang Enzo's shin on the edge of the couch as we were leaving, which made him cry pretty hard. And it seemed that his mood kind of went south from that point on. I think his four molars coming in at once has finally caught up to him. Everyone keeps telling us what a big deal it is, but up to this point they didn't really seem to bother him.

After errands, we came home and tried to take an afternoon nap. Enzo didn't fall asleep in his crib, so I took him on a walk around the neighborhood. He fell asleep about two minutes into the walk and stayed asleep for about 30 minutes.

Enzo cried the whole drive up to the Metcalfs for no apparent reason. He settled down once we got there. We played in Gabe's room before dinner. Enzo ate a big meal. After dinner, we played in the front yard in the sandbox and the pool. Enzo was getting upset at the littlest things tonight, like when Gabe took the hose away from him or he got some water splashed in his face. Things that normally he would care about. Enzo left the BBQ crying.

He was upset through his bath, and cried a little when I put him the crib tonight too. The fireworks just finished and didn't wake him up, so hopefully he'll stay asleep all night.

kidspace kidspace

Rose Bowl with the dogs, then back home for breakfast.

Nanny Note: We played at Kidspace. We played in the indoor play room, the water tables and up in the stream. Enzo was wiped out.

I let Alex go early this afternoon, and then walked up to the neighbors to say hi. Wes was still sleeping but we went inside to play anyway. Enzo was really comfortable, and even went into the other room to play with Eric without me. After Wes woke up from her nap, Eric and I brought the kids down to Kidspace (Enzo's second visit of the day.) Wes and Enzo had fun together playing in the fountain and then in the stream. It was ridiculously hot today, so the water was perfect for them. Eric and Wes stopped by the house to play while we waited for Zoe to come home from work.

Enzo had no afternoon nap, so he was getting real tired at dinner time. We managed to eat, and take a nice bath. Zoe read him a few books and he was ready to crash early.

grease is the word

Enzo slept in until 7:AM so we were a little late getting down to the Rose Bowl this morning, but we still got some quality time in with the dogs. Zoe had breakfast waiting for Enzo when we got home. Enzo's molars seemed to be bothering him this today, so we loaded him up with some Tylenol. Add "teeth" to the list of words he knows.

Nanny Note: We played with toys outside, took a ride in his car around the neighborhood and read books. After nap we ate lunch, watched Sesame Street and played in the water. We took a walk at 3:PM and Enzo fell asleep until we got home. He has been in a pretty good mood all day. He really enjoyed coloring this afternoon as long as he was busy eating cookies and not crayons. Enzo also enjoyed playing with ice. I mean getting it all over the the house.

After work Enzo was in a great mood. He was chasing the dogs around laughing and screeching with delight in the living room before Zoe got home. We played outside and drove around the block in his car while Zoe made us pasta dinner. Enzo loved his pasta so much that he rubbed his cheesy olive oily hands fingers through his hair, making one of the biggest dinnertime messes of himself of all time. Short family walk after dinner with the dogs, and more playing out in the front yard. Then the usual bedtime count down.

sand crab

Big day with the man today. After breakfast at Peets, we headed to el Porto beach again. Crowded today but Zoe managed to find a parking spot after dropping us off. I dug a big hole at the edge of the waves that Enzo wallowed in on and off for about 3 hours. He loves the water. We dug in the sand and found some little creatures to examine too. He skipped his morning nap and ate lunch under the tent. At around 12:30PM he was getting pretty tired, so we packed it all up and drove home. He slept all the way back to Pasadena, despite us driving on the bumpiest freeway on the planet.

After a quick stop at the grocery store, we went home. Soon after, Enzo's little friend Wesley came by with her mom and dad. Enzo and Wes played together in the front yard before dinner. They both did pretty well with dinner, but did do a little eating on the run. Really nice to see them interacting - passing toys back and forth, and talking to each other. Wes, who is three months older, actually knows a lot of words already. Enzo mainly replies with some babbling, but they seem to understand each other anyway.

Enzo and Wes both started to fade around 7:PM, so we broke up the party. After a short walk with the dogs, Enzo took his bath. He was exhausted after only about 45 min of sleep all day, and went to sleep soon after.
