unscathed

Zoe made pancakes this morning. We ate breakfast in the kitchen so we could get the hot of the stove. As per usual, Enzo made a mess of his syrup. We spent the morning getting mommy ready for her trip. Enzo watched a little Nemo and played with his trains to pass the time.

On our way to the airport, Enzo fell asleep. He stayed asleep when we dropped Zoe off, and slept all the way back to the house. About an hour total.

Back home, we ate a small lunch of bologna, noodles, and mango. Pretty random, but all quite delicious in their own right. Enzo and I drove over to the bookstore to see what we could see after lunch. It is pretty much impossible to find a good kids book that we don't already own, but I found a few. The Lorac and another Leo Lionni book are both sort of over his head right now — too many words. Also got Where's Waldo, which he didn't quite figure out. On each page there's a Waldo headshot on a post card which overlays a drawing of a huge crowd of tiny little people. The goal is to find Waldo in the crowd, but Enzo just points to the big picture of Waldo on the postcard, and is like, "he's right there!" Couldn't quite explain it to him. Thinking about using whiteout to cover up postcard Waldo.

After the book store, we went to the park to run around. I was very nervous after the crazy day he had yesterday, and also because I have strict orders to not let Enzo hurt himself. But he was fine. Pretty mellow today. Did some climbing and sliding, but spent most of his time playing in the sand with some other kid's truck.

We stopped by Heirloom on the way home to grab second lunch. That was a mistake. How long does it take to microwave a piece of quiche? Twenty minutes! Enzo was getting very upset, and my left arm was about to fall off. I had to hold him the entire time.

I tried putting Enzo down for a nap when we got home, but he just cried and cried and cried in his crib. Finally went up to rescue him. We finished his bottle and then read some books to calm down.

We walked up to say hi to Wes before dinner for a minute, and then came home to cook our lasagna that mommy made for us last night. It turned out perfectly and Enzo loved it. Which is good because he'll be eating that for the next four nights.

On our family walk, we bumped into the Pfleegers again, and stopped to play for a bit. Enzo and Wes marched around and around the house banging mini pots and pans for about 20 minutes. All captured on video.

We got home just in time for emergency meltdown quick bath, and then a nice cold bottle of milk to relax. We read many books, and snuggled for almost an hour in the Fatboy. Enzo was very sweet tonight. I got many kisses. I finally put him to bed around 8:PM.

One injury free day in a row and counting.

stumble trip

If we ever had a doubt that Enzo was going to grow up to be a typical little boy with bumps, scrapes, and bruises, today we got our answer. Our theory is that this is all because he discovered how to run this week. Before we even got out of the door this morning, Enzo tripped on his blanket and landed face first on the hardwood. Some tears.

We made it through our coffee at Peets with Wes without incident despite a lot of running around on the concrete and a number of close calls with steps, iron fences, and metal railings.

The trouble started at the playground. Second incident of the day, Enzo slipped on the slide and hit his face. More tears. He quickly recovered and had fun playing on all the equipment. After a long nap in the car we stopped at a one year birthday party for Malia.

Hadn't been there for five minuted before Enzo trips over someones foot, and boom, face first into the asphalt driveway. More tears, and a big bump and mark on his forehead. After lunch and cake and bouncy castle with daddy, Enzo tripped again carrying his sippy cup. Again, on to the concrete. This time, his sippy cup hit him on the mouth. A few more tears. He did love his cupcake - he stuck his finger in the frosting, put it in his mouth, turned to mommy and said, "mmmmmm".

Back home, we had the bright idea to take him down the street for a walk. He started just running full speed down the sidewalk, and again, trip and forehead straight into the concrete. Yet more tears and another mark and bump on the other side of his head. He recovered quickly. He continued on and had a nice walk, spending a lot of walking up and time rolling down our neighbors grassy hill.

Back at the house, Zoe were talking about how many times he'd fallen today, when bam, down again, this time against the fence near the driveway. More tears and a scraped knee to top off the injury list.

Despite all his bumps today (he got hurt more times in an 8 hour day than he has in the last 3 months), he actually did pretty well. He only cried for a few seconds for all his injuries, including the big tumble on the asphalt, and quickly recovered. Hopefully the big egg(s) on his forehead recover as quickly.

With all the injuries and excitement of the party, Enzo never took an afternoon nap. He started getting cranky and tired around 4:30PM so we let him watch some Nemo while we waited for our delivery dinner to arrive. He didn't each much, and we gave him an early bath, but he perked up after his bath and hung in there for another hour. He loved finding Goldbug and finding specific books on the shelf. He played with his trains and his toys, and had a sweet afternoon with his mommy and daddy. He gave in at 7pm.

train man

First thing this morning we surprised Enzo with his new train set and table. He was pretty stoked about it and spent the morning pushing trains through the tunnel and pulling apart the track pieces.

After Zoe went to work, Enzo and I dropped off the dogs and went to Peets for breakfast. Enzo was stressing me out — running full speed down the concrete ramp, and stumbling down the grass hill into the fence below. Not a very relaxing coffee and bagel. We headed out for a drive-nap about an hour before class.

Enzo fell asleep as planned and got a great nap before school. We met Zoe in the school lot and she took him to class while I went and hit golf balls and the range right next door. Zoe had to head back to the hospital, so I came back and spent the last 30 minutes of class with Enzo. He was in a great mood and had fun during closing circle. Apparently he was up to his old tricks when Zoe had him — trying to go outside during class and dumping his snack on the ground without eating a bite.

Milestones: Enzo has added a few more words to his vocabulary - owl, blue (bah-loo), shoe, chip, acorn and train (and also "choo choo").

Nanny Note: We played with the train set for a while, read books in his room, then I put him down for nap. He complained a bit but not too bad. I don't know how much he actually slept. He was very quiet for most of the time so that's a good sign. I did listen in after 15 minutes and he was talking to himself and listening to music. At least he was not crying. I don't think he slept at all so we went to Kidspace but he wanted to play at the park. When we got home he went to play with his trains.

After picking up the dogs, I came back to hang with Enzo and let Alex go a little early. We played with his train, and then read books in his room. He requested a Casey in the Bath a couple times. Zoe got stuck in the OR, so Enzo ran out to get some Peruvian food from down the street. We were right in the middle of dinner when Zoe came home, and Enzo was very happy to see her.

After dinner, we took a bubbly bath, and then played with the train table again. Finally Enzo grabbed his blanket and headed toward the stairs. Time for bed.

September 27, 2007

bah-loo

Zoe on call last night, so Enzo I were on our own this morning. We took the dogs for a walk around the neighborhood, and then went to Peets for coffee. I scored the only highchair in the place which made breakfast a lot easier cause I'd left the stroller in Zoe's car. We came straight back home after breakfast, and I dropped Enzo off with Alex.

Nanny Note: We played in his room, reading books and coloring. We played with playdough and then we went to Gymboree. He was a madman, running all over the place. He had fun. When we got home we had a snack and played catch with Betty. After nap we went to Amy's but Enzo didn't really feel like playing. He was two different people today.

At the end of the day, I was working in the office upstairs when I heard Enzo sobbing in the front yard. Alex had him in his old bungee jumper thing, and he was crying because she'd just taken him out of it. She tried putting him back in, but somehow that made him worse. He was completely freaking out, so I picked him up and gave him a bottle of milk inside. He calmed down right when Zoe came home from work.

We went to the farmers market for dinner. Zoe and I traded off chasing Enzo all over the place. He was walking on people's blankets, knocking over drinks, and falling in the mud. It was ridiculous trying to get him to eat anything so we left.

We bumped into little Jack and his mom on our family walk, and stopped to talk for a while. Jack yelled "Enzo!" when we he saw us coming. He's 2 ½. Back home Enzo got his bath and books before bed. Zoe taught him that his chair and table are blue (pronounced "BAH-loooo). We spent the rest of the night finishing up his train table. Big surprise in the morning.

September 26, 2007

school day

Mommy made pancakes first thing thing this morning, some for Enzo and daddy, and some little ones to bring for snack today. After mommy left for work, we took the dogs for a walk around the block, and then went to Peets for coffee and another snack. Eric and Wes stopped by for a few minutes but we had to head out to school.

I drove Enzo around hoping he'd fall asleep before class. He finally did but only in time to catch about a 20 minute nap. He was upset to be woken up, so we started class on the wrong foot. Enzo drank a little bit of milk right before opening circle which calmed him down.

He was into circle time and open play for a good, long time, but then decided he wanted to go outside. He got upset when I tried to direct him back into the play area, so we went outside for a little walk and another hit off the bottle. He was ready to go back in after about ten minutes. When I went out to put the snack together, he came out with me. He gathered acorns and throw them in the trash can.

Although he did sit quietly in his chair for snack, it was kind of train wreck. He first dumped his water into his snack bowl, then picked all his fruit and pancake out of his his bowl and stuffed them into his glass. Then he dumped them back into his bowl. Then he dumped the bowl of fruit and water down the front of his shirt. Really made me proud. Most of the other kids sat quietly munching away.

He got a little torqued right before closing circle, but once he saw everyone head inside, he wanted to be there too. We sang some good song together, and then he was ready to go. When I got home, he was obviously tired, and started crying right away. I passed him off to Alex and headed downtown.

Nanny Note: After nap, we went to play at Kidspace. Enzo dug for dinosaur bones, looked at the rock exhibit, played in the water and we explored the gardens. He was really upset about not watching Nemo so we stayed out all afternoon to avoid the battle.

Tonight Enzo and I went over to Wes' house to eat Thai takeout. Zoe is on call and Christa is out of town. The kids did OK with dinner, both of them getting a little antsy near the end. Wes threw a chunk of rice across the table which stuck to Enzo's face. We tried not to laugh. After dinner they played, read some books, and chased the puppy a bit.

After bath back home, Enzo and I read books and snuggled. I asked Enzo to get me specific books off the shelf and he got it right each time. Get the Kissing book, get me a book about animals, get the Gold Bug book. It was getting late, so even though he didn't seem too tired, I plopped him in his crib, and he went to sleep a few minutes later.

September 25, 2007

nature walk

Enzo and I had our morning milk together, and then went out to play fetch with the puppies. Zoe had eggs and fried bologna, a childhood favorite of daddy's, waiting for Enzo when we got home. He really liked it.

Milestones: Enzo has started to sing along with Zoe when she reads this book called Moo, Baa, La La La, which he reads while sitting on the potty. There's this line "three singing pigs say - LA LA LA", and he chimes in with the "LA LA LA".

Nanny Note: We read Clever Crow, watched a little Nemo, played with playdough and played outside. For lunch, I just gave Enzo a small amount because he doesn't really eat much, he likes to snack. After lunch we went to Descanso Gardens. Enzo loved the streams nad ponds. They all had huge coi fish and a few turtles too. We walked all over that place. When we got home, we read books and had a snack and played with playdough again.

Zoe had dinner just about ready by the time I got back from my meeting. Enzo was getting irritated because he was hungry (and tired), but we sat down for dinner right away. After all the fussing, he didn't eat much. He intentionally dropped a good portion of his meal on the floor for Betty to eat. He did however drink a huge sippy cup of water mixed with a bit of appajooo.

We bumped into the Pfleegers on our family walk with the dogs, and they walked with us. Enzo and Wes enjoyed Pocky sticks along the way, and were soon covered with chocolate. Enzo got an early and very bubbly bath tonight. After taking a big poop in the potty, as is traditional almost every night now also, he settled in for some more books with mommy. Soon after, he was ready for bed.

September 24, 2007

nacho

Enzo woke up in a great mood this morning. I've been turning the monitor on if I wake up before him, and trying to catch him before he starts really crying for us to come in. We went to play fetch with the girls while Zoe made french toast. Enzo didn't eat much this morning.

Nanny Note: We read books in Enzo's room then we went to MyGym. Enzo didn't want to participate much today. He was OK for the first 10-15 minutes then he started to cry and complain. When he was sad, we would just sit off to the side and observe until he felt better. After class, we went over to the petstore to look at the mice, chinchillas, birds, fish, spiders, snakes and cats. He had fun watching the mice today.

This evening was kind of crazy. Just after Zoe and I came home from work, our landscaper guy came by to review our project. Looks like we're going to do it. We had to park Enzo in front of Nemo so we could both talk to David. Right as he was leaving, the Pfleegers stopped in because they were getting some work on their house, and i wasn't quite finished yet.

After dinner, they decided to go stay in a hotel rather than go home to their dusty, fiberglassy house. They left Nacho with us which was great. Nacho got along great with Harriet and Betty.

Enzo started to get fussy so we gave him a bath, and then Zoe read him some book. He was ready to crash at about 7:45PM.

September 23, 2007

no mo

Enzo woke up in the best mood this morning. I have no idea why sometimes he's happy and sometime not in the mornings.

We headed out for breakfast in Eagle Rock to this little place we haven't been to a long time. Our food looked great, but Enzo just wanted to run up and down the sidewalk. He's been difficult to keep in his seat at meals lately. So we traded off Enzo chasing duty while we gulped down our meals. On our back up the street we stopped in Swork for a real coffee, and to let Enzo play with the train.

We then went down to Kidspace to get a pass to see Mo Willems later. It took forever for them to open the door, and I was running out of ways to entertain Enzo. Finally we got inside, picked up Mo's new book, and saw an animated movie of Knuffle Bunny.

When we got back home, Enzo crashed in Zoe's lap with a bottle of milk while I took the dogs to the park. I stumbled upon a boston terrier meet up which was fun. There were ten bostons and four frenchies there. When I got home, we walked up to our neighbors to say hi for a minute.

After Enzo failed to go down for a nap, we decided to bail on the Mo Willems thing. Li and Neil came over with Elijah. He is getting so big and is close to crawling already. Neil and I went to hit a few golf balls while the mommies and babies hung out.

For dinner we had fish tacos with the Pfleegers. Enzo sat in his chair for about five minutes before getting upset. Ugh. He barely ate, and was obviously exhausted. He perked up when mommy busted out popsicles.

We gave Wes and Enzo a bath together tonight for the first time which was so cute. Wes was splashing and laughing and blowing bubbles while Enzo sat there like, "why is Wes in my bath?". Wes borrowed some pajamas for the cold walk home. After some books and milk and some crazy running around and some matching game and some rearranging his collection of wooden food, he finally went to sleep.

September 22, 2007

downpour

Enzo cried again this morning after he woke up, but not nearly as much as yesterday. Once, Enzo settled down and had a little yogurt smoothie, we headed out.

First we stopped by Heirloom for a coffee and some pastries for the drive to Santa Monica. Enzo quickly fell asleep in the car and we drove in silence. We stopped and parked the car and sat there for another 15 minutes waiting for Enzo to wake up.

He finally opened his eyes, and we piled out and walked over to the farmers market. We got Enzo some random mushroom pasta for breakfast which he really loved. We walked back around the block to go into this great little natural product toy store called Acorn. All sorts of great wooden vehicles, castles, puzzles, etc... Enzo desperately needs more toys, so we picked up a couple things - a snake, a crocodile, and a little wind-up car.

We then headed over to Montana Ave to stop by Lucky, hoping to find another pair of the camouflage pants that we loved so much, but he has since grown out of. No luck. We should have bought one in every size when they had them last year.

For lunch we went down the street to City Bakery. Zoe ran inside while Enzo and I waited in the car. Zoe was gone for about 20 minutes, and it POURED the entire time. It's been months since we've seen rain like that. Enzo munched on our takeout the whole way home, and then went down for a nap right away.

After nap, we met Eric and Wes at a teachers supply store across town called Lakeshore. They had this giant set of teeth and toothbrush which Enzo loved. We picked up a few crayons and a sketch pad for Enzo. On the way home, we grabbed a Jamba juice for Enzer.

Back home, we got ready to go out while Enzo soaked up a few minutes of Nemo. Alex came around 5:30, and we went across town again for dinner with friends. Enzo was asleep by the time we got home.

September 21, 2007

17 months

Enzo has been sick and teething lately, and today he was out of sorts all day. He woke up at 4 am and went back to sleep. He woke up again at 5 am and went back to sleep. At 6 am, however, his crying sounded like he meant business, so we went in and gave him some milk and a nice snuggy on the Fatboy, but this peace lasted for just 45 minutes, when he woke up for good and had a super long, super wild and loud meltdown. he was soothed, finally, with some more milk, and his first time watching his "Bringing Home Baby" episode. he did not seem at all impressed.

Mommy had the day off, so we all took the dogs to day care and then went for breakfast. After breakfast Enzo got taken for a drive by dad and took a 45 minute nap in the car. After his nap, mommy took him to his class, and he did well at first but then he started threatening to have meltdown # 5 or 6 of the day (we lost track) so mommy gave up and they left early. Once he got home to meet Alex, somehow his mood changed and we got Good Enzo back. Go figure.

Nanny Note: We went to get some lunch to take to Grandma's. Enzo liked his rice and taquitos. Enzo had a good time looking all over the house for the kittens. He found one under my parents bed and we played with him. Grandma Jean was making cookies and she gave one to Enzo.

Mommy and daddy ran some errands, picked up the dogs, and when they got home, Enzo was cheerful and funny and in a chipper mood. he ate a gigantic dinner and had a nice, long, hot bubble bath. he played the memory game with us, read some books, played for a long time with his stacking cups, then brushed his teeth and went off to bed. Hopefully he will wake up on the right side of the crib tomorrow morning. 17 months old today!

September 20, 2007

berry

Enzo woke up a little early and may have finished his bottle curled up in daddy's bed. Unfortunately, he didn't fall back asleep. After we woke up, we gather up the dogs and some snack and went to the Rose Bowl. Zoe on call last so after fetch with the puppies, Enzo and went to Cindy's for pancakes. We got back just in time to meet Alex.

Milestones: Enzo said "berry" when he saw a drawing of a strawberry in one of his books, and he started saying "apple juice" again. He says that for everything he drinks that isn't plain water.

Nanny Note: We read books, sang songs, played with playdough and went to Gymboree. Enzo did very well at class today. When we got home we had a snack then read books in his room. We watched Sesame Street for a while then I put him down for a nap. After nap we read more books and tried to have a snack. He just wanted to mush up his food and make a mess.

Zoe came home, and we all went to the farmer's market. Enzo ran crazy around the people having picnic dinners, occasionally stopping by our blanket for a bite of hot dog or drink of lemonade. We bumped into Sophia and her parents. Sophia also goes to Waldorf but is in the earlier class. On our way out of the market, a woman said to me "hey, there's Enzo. We just saw him at Gymboree". We think it's funny that Enzo already knows people that we don't. Enzo walked some of the way back to the car, but I scooped him up to cross the train tracks.

We took the dogs for a family walk when we got home. Enzo tired to eat a popsicle as we walked which was kind of a disaster. He started getting sleepy in the backpack so we took a shortcut home. After bath, Enzo read yet another stack of book before bed. His nose is still running, but thicker snot today, so hopefully on it's way out.

September 19, 2007

teether

Enzo and I took the dogs to play fetch this morning. It was pretty chilly and kind of rainy. Enzo wore his new vest again. So cute. He was all over the field today, running around after the dogs. We came home to a big plate of cheesy eggs and fruit.

I took Enzo to school at about 10:AM because I wanted him to catch a nap before class. He was really tired and upset when I put him in the car, but he settled down and fell asleep within five minutes of leaving the driveway. I had to wake him up for class 30 minutes later, and he was upset again as we walked up the school driveway.

He settled down when class started, and was really into the opening circle songs - picking imaginary strawberries and doing some of the hand movements. He was great during open play - interacting with other kids, sharing toys, not getting upset when the older boy there kept snatching away his toys. He helped the teacher sweep the floor with the little broom. And although he did come over to me every five minutes or so, he wasn't clingy, just stopping by to get a kiss or hand me a toy he was carrying around. He was the only kid who really sat and played with the teacher for any amount of time. She seems to really like him.

Near the end of open play, right before snack, he started to get a little fussy, and when we went outside, he grabbed for the big broom, i told him he couldn't have it and we wlked right by. he got very upset, and had a pretty major meltdown. I tried for 15 minutes to bring him back, but he couldn't stop sobbing. So we left about 15 minutes early.

He has four teeth coming in right now, his nose is running non-stop, and he just generally not doing well. He spent most of the morning with his finger in his mouth rubbing his gums. I felt so bad that he missed part of class because he really does seem to love it. he settled down in the car, after drinking some milk, and was in pretty good spirits while I made him his lunch.

Nanny Note: This morning we played outside, exploring the neighborhood, and we watched Good Night Gorilla before school. After school Enzo ate a small lunch, we played outside with toys, played in his room and tried to take a nap. When he wouldn't go to sleep, I decided to just let him play and I read him more books. I left early for open play hoping he would fall asleep in the car. He did. We had a good time at Gymboree today.

Enzo and I went on a short walk before dinner. Wes wasn't home so we continued around the block. It was cold out tonight. Back home, I parked Enzo in front of Nemo while I made his fabulous dinner. He ate a lot, really like the gyoza and mini sausage from the Japanese market. After dinner we went on another walk, this time with the dogs. Enzo ate a popsicle along the way, and I think the cold made his teeth feel better.

He was great after his bath - took a big poop in the potty and let me brush his teeth. We had fun reading books and rolling around in the Fatboy, which is usually mommy time. He went to bed with no problem.

September 18, 2007

dip and bite

I gave Enzo his morning milk at around 6:15AM and he fell back asleep in my arms for another hour. His nose was a little runny, maybe a cold or from all his teeth coming in right now. Once we finally woke up, we went downstairs to take a poop in the potty like we do every morning now. He is always so proud. He stands up, turns around, and points at his poop every time, like "check that out".

It was late so we didn't take the dogs to the Rose Bowl. Just a walk around the block this morning, then back for breakfast. Zoe made Enzo a soft boiled egg with toast strips. She told him to "dip and bite" and he did. Again and again and again.

Nanny Note: We played outside, inspecting leaves and seed pods. We played in his room, reading books and coloring. We watched Where the Wild Things Are and then we went to the park. We played quietly for a while when we got home then we watched Good Night Gorilla before nap time. I didn't bother putting a lunch together today, I just gave him a mixture of snacks. He seemed to like that. After nap I gave Enzo fruit and the rest of his milk then we went over to Kidspace. I could tell that he wasn't feeling well so we came home. He has been sneezing all day and his nose is running non-stop.

After Zoe came home from work, Enzo and I played in front yard and out on the sidewalk in his red push car. He was laughing so hard and screaming when I would let go and he'd go off rolling down the hill. Safety first.

Wes and parents came over for fish and crab cake dinner. The big hit was the strawberries with mascarpone and brown sugar. Enzo's nose starting running like crazy during dinner, and he didn't eat much. He did squish up his bobeebo (that's burrito in Wesley-speak) and throw it on the floor though. We played downstairs and then up in Enzo's room. I read the kids Mr. Seahorse.

Enzo took a deep hot bath, and then read a stack of books with Zoe before bed.

September 17, 2007

cancellation

Back into the routine this morning. Enzo and I played fetch with the pups at the Rose Bowl (it was cold this morning), while mommy made the little man a big cheesy omelet, which he thoroughly enjoyed.

Milestones: Enzo says out, in, down, that, on, up, pop (short for popsicle). He also say "pop" when he means poop (when asking for the potty).

Nanny Note: We read books and played with toys in his room until about 10:15, then we went to MyGym. I don't know why but he cries at that 10:30 class. We saw his old friend Sophia and her mom. Enzo likes the swings that the teachers bring out and he loves the trampoline. When we got home I let him watch a half hour of Nemo then I tried to put him down. He drank a whole bottle of milk, then looked up at me and said "down?", so we played for another and a half.

Zoe's OR cases were canceled this afternoon, so we both came home early to take Enzo to Amy's Playground. Wes was there too. Enzo loved the big bouncy castle, and the big exit slide. He also like the hamster tube car/slide/step thing. Enzo and Wes played in the big playhouse kitchen, after some demolitions derby in big police cars pushed by their daddies.

Enzo and I took the dogs for a walk before dinner, and then we ate our yummy chicken curry. Enzo is such a little japanese kid - loved his curry rice tonight. We all did a lot of rolling around in the Fatboy up in Enzo's room after dinner. After bath, Zoe read him a stack of books and I brushed his teeth.

September 16, 2007

hey, boy

We started our day with breakfast in Old Pas at Le Pain Quotidien with Wes and parents. Enzo did more running around on the sidewalk than eating, but had fun. Enzo crashed out in the car after breakfast, so we headed out for a drive and ended up at the Japanese market.

There were a bunch of sample tables set up at the market, and Enzo ate every single one - rice, noodles, gyoza, udon. He also got an entire shopping cart of crunchy little treats for the upcoming week.

After the market, we headed over to Katie & Scott's to make a dent in our party leftovers, and to celebrate Scott's birthday. We got to see some more of little Sophie.

We tried our best for a real nap when we got home, but Enzo got very upset when I left him in the crib. We let him watch a few minutes of Nemo, and then we went back in to Old Pas to buy Enzo some new pajamas. His old ones are too tight and don't keep him warm enough.

Enzer fell asleep in the car again, so we let him sleep for a few minutes in the driveway. He was not happy when I woke him up after only 15 minutes, but he settled down when we went up to Wesley's for dinner. He barely ate but he did play a lot and had fun.

Zoe got in some great snuggle time with Enzer after his bath tonight. He got upset when Zoe read him the book about the kitty that jumps into the pond to catch the moon.

September 15, 2007

party

We had breakfast with the Pfleegers at Peets to start the day. Enzo and Wes were running around all over as per usual. Dee and Buzz took turns chasing after Enzo. He managed to go unscathed, running down that sketch ramp at full speed.

After breakfast we went to Garfield Park to play on the swings and slides. Daddy got sick to his stomach from swinging with Enzo for too long. Enzo of course wanted "more". He also really liked the enclosed tube slide and the steering wheel thing at the top of the stairs. After the park, we went on a family grocery shopping trip to Whole Foods. Dee pushed the cart while Enzo munched on giant organic cheese puffs and a cheese stick.

When we got home, Enzo was ready for his nap. Once asleep, Buzz and I went to hit some golf balls at the range right down the street. Little did I know that while I was gone, Zoe and Dee were rearranging the house and friends of ours were driving and flying in from all over for a surprise birthday party.

After the longest golf lesson of my life (the golf instructor was in on the plot), we returned home for a big surprise and a nice gathering of friends and family. Alex came to help with Enzo, and he was great for the whole event. He had a lot of fun actually.

I put Enzo to sleep after the guests had gone and he had his bath, and then Zoe and I went out for another drink while Dee and Buzz did some babysitting (and a lot of cleaning up!).

September 14, 2007

riblets

Enzo was up at 5:AM then fell back asleep until 5:45AM. I woke up to give him his bottle in the Fatboy and he fell back asleep for another hour on my chest. We all drove the dogs out to day care and then meet Dee & Buzz and the Pfleegers at Heirloom for breakfast. Wes and Enzo sat together and shared beans, eggs, fruit and a bobeebo.

After breakfast, we went by the house to grab some fruit and some milk, and then mommy and Enzo were off the school. They got there a little early and Enzo walked around in the big school yard by himself. He had a pretty good time but was much more clingy that he usually is. He got upset about a broom early on in the session, and never truly got over it. He did like the baskets of pine cones and funny wooly balls, and like stomping around in the wood chips. Nature boy also at one point wrapped his arms around a big tree trunk and gave it a kiss. He liked looking up at the branches into the sun and leaned back so much while he was doing this he almost fell over. He made some cute new friends in school - more girls, surprise, surprise. He liked Chloe today.

Milestones: Enzo said "bye bye" and "chip" and "ring" today.

After school, Enzo came home to eat lunch and play in the pool while we all watched. He didn't want anything to do with an attempted nap, and was much more interested in hanging out and entertaining us all with his many tricks and silly babbling.

Finally he fell asleep for a bit while Buzz and I drove to pick up the dogs. He was soooo tired, and slumped over in his car seat 5 minutes into our trip. He was in a great mood after his short nap, and was very entertaining at dinner eating his bbq ribs.

After dinner we went for a family walk. Back home Enzo had a long bath, and read a big stack of books again with Dee. He got a little crazy right before bed as usual, and started crawling up the stairs by himself. I scooped him up, wrapped in his blanket, and plopped him in his crib.

surprise visit

Mommy had to go round on little Micheal's mom this morning, so Enzo and I headed out to breakfast after playing with the dogs. We shared a piece of quiche at Heirloom. A poop in the diaper abruptly ended breakfast. On the way home, Enzo fell asleep in the car so I drove around to give him a little nap. I went by the house to drop him off for Alex. They headed out, and Zoe and I worked on Enzo's room.

Milestones: Enzo's been saying some new words lately. Today he said apple, egg, dirty and tried to say shark, all for the first time.

Nanny Note: We went to Grandma Jeans to play with the kittens. Enzo also played with my Great Aunt's old jewelery. When we got home we played in the pool then we colored up in Enzo's room. Enzo ate a small lunch, we watched Good Night Gorilla then he took a short nap. After nap we watched a little bit of Nemo then we went to Kidspace to play.

Grandma Dee and Grandpa Buzz surprised at me lunch with an unexpected visit to LA cause it's my birthday soon. They were so happy to see Enzo and couldn't believe what a big boy his now. We all walked up to see Wes and Nacho, and then we all came back home for Thai takeout. Wes and Enzo both had good dinners and played in Enzo's room.

Dee got in some good snuggle time with Enzo when she read him a big stack of bedtime stories. Right before bed, Enzo asked to use the potty, and did, and then he went straight to bed.

first day of school

Predictably, Enzo was up at 5:30AM this morning after going to bed earlier than he's even gone to bed last night. We took the dogs to play fetch once it got light outside. After dropping the dogs off at home, we drove across town to Peets for breakfast. I let Enzo run around for a long time after eating - chasing birds, stumbling down the grassy hill, and touching all the sprinkler heads.

He fell asleep in the car after Peets, so I drove him around while he took about a 30 minute nap. We stopped by home to change clothes and pick up our snack and then headed over to school. Enzo is enrolled in the Parent-Toddler program at the Pasadena Waldorf School, which meets twice a week for about 90 minutes or so.

We got there about 10 minutes early so walked around in the big school yard. As more kids showed up they joined us on the lawn. There are seven kids in Enzo's class. Class began when Enzo's teacher sang a little "follow me" song and went into the classroom. We all sat in a big circle and sang a few songs before going around and introducing ourselves. At first Enzo was not happy about being in the circle and just wanted to be back outside, but he settled down and was quickly mesmerized by his teacher's singing.

Because it was the first day, there wasn't a whole lot of structure to the class. The kids basically played in the space with all the various toys, and the parents are encouraged to just leave them alone. Some moms sat with their kids, but Enzo was fine so I sat in the corner and observed. He would occasionally bring me a toy he'd found, but then would get back in the mix with a little encouragement. He interacted with the other kids pretty well, although at this age they're not really playing together, but more playing side by side.

After social play time, it was snack time. Zoe signed me up to bring the class snack on the first day which was so kind of her. I made a potato frittata last night (with Zoe's guidance on the phone) and also had steamed carrot sticks with hummus. Other parents brought chopped fruit. So after all the kids sat in their wee chairs at this little table, I served them their snack in a little bowl. And gave them water in real glass glasses too.

Enzo loved his snack, and stayed in his chair for a while. He also dumped his water into his bowl, so ended up with a fruit-hummus soup. He did get up and walk around, but the teacher plopped him back down because he was still eating. The rule is you can only leave the table if you're done (you don't have to finish). You can't go off walking around while gnawing on a big old chunk of apple like Enzo. After he was done, he got up again, walked by the teachers snack bowl and grabbed her leftover frittata and stuffed it in his mouth. All the kids then took their bowls to the wash bin.

We filtered back into the play space for closing circle. We sang some more songs, and then it was time to go. Enzo could not have been better. He was outgoing, cheerful, and cute as hell the whole time. Really, really good for him I think. And just so calming and peaceful in comparison to the mania of Gymboree where everyone is yelling "good job!" and "clap for them!"

We met Zoe and Alex at home, and Enzo went straight down for a nap.

Zoe and I ran some errands, and then came home to play with Enzo. Wes and her parents came by for takeout Peruvian chicken. After dinner, Enzo took his bath, read books with Zoe and then crashed.

September 11, 2007

tired boy

Enzo slept in until 6:30. Seems to be back on track, not waking up at 5:AM (of course now that I've said that). After his morning milk with mommy, we took the dogs to play fetch. Enzo walked all over the field by himself and got his sneakers very muddy. We came home for a cheesy egg omelet that Zoe had waiting.

Nanny Note: We went to MyGym and Enzo did 100% better. He played on everything. He especially liked the big ball pit and trampoline. Enzo didn't even cry when it was time for the kids to play to play away from us. They call that Separation Time. Enzo would look for me, walk to me and I would send him right back to play. When we got home I put out his puzzle, blocks and books for him to play with. We played in the pool for a long time then watched Sesame Street until nap. After nap Enzo finished his lunch then we went to the park.

Zoe on call tonight, so headed over to Wesley's house for dinner. Enzo was a little fussy but seemed to settle down after a small snack. Nacho chased Enzo around the living room, nipping at his feet. At first he thought it was funny, but then I think it was freaking him out a little. I read some books to the kids and then they rolled around on the Fatboy. They kissed 2 or 3 times without any encouragement.

Enzo got upset only a few minutes in to dinner, and I couldn't settle him down, so we had to leave. Back home, he was looking so tired even though it was only 6:PM. I gave him a very early bath, and then a bottle. He was obviously exhausted and was ready for bed at 6:50PM. After I put him down, he mumbled to himself for a few minutes before drifting off.

babysitting

Mommy was up and off to the OR early this morning. Enzo and I took the dogs to the Rose Bowl, and then went to Cindy's for pancakes and peaches. Enzo played with his trucks while we waited for breakfast to come, and then he sat and ate a very big breakfast which included some of daddy's cheese omelet. He did throw a couple of whole pancakes on the ground, and squeeze peaches between his fingers, but was pretty good otherwise. We got home just in time to meet Alex.

Nanny Note: We read a few books played outside and sang some of our favorite songs. At 10:15 we went to his MyGym class. We didn't stay long because Enzo started to cry at circle time. I took him out of circle time and stood off to the side so he could observe. I brought him back in for an activity but he still wanted to leave so we watched for a few minutes then left. At home we played outside, played with toys in his room, read more books, ate lunch and watched Where the Wild Things Are. After nap we watched Good Night Gorilla then we played with water for awhile and read more books.

Enzo was in a great mood when we got home from work. I rolled him around on the couch, tickling and biting him, and generally knocking him around, which he loves. He was laughing so hard and squealing so loud that I had to stop to let him catch his breath.

While mommy made dinner, Enzo and I walked up to see Nacho. She was asleep, but we played with Wes for a while before heading home. Enzo looooved mommy's meatloaf, and ate one of the biggest meals ever. He is getting so good with his spoon and fork. Almost never uses his hands anymore if he can help it.

After dinner, I took the dogs and Enzo for a quick walk while Zoe got his bath together. Enzo and mommy had storytime and I went back over to the neighbors house to babysit Wes. It's her parents anniversary, so they went out for dinner. After I left, Enzo took two more poops (one in the potty) and then ran crazy around the house before mommy could corral him and throw him in the crib.

Little baby Nacho is asleep in my lap right now. So cute.

September 09, 2007

morning with mommy

Enzo woke up in a chipper mood at 6:30 - no crying today for some reason. Woke up on the right side of the crib. After some milk he said good bye to dad who had a golf date. Enzo and mommy had some breakfast, played with playdough, then went for some coffee. They went to a coffee place that has a play area for kids, so Enzo made some new friends and also met up with his #1, Wes.

After some trains and bagels, Enzo went on a car ride and a long nap. After he woke up he and mommy played at the park for awhile, then went home to play with the hose and read some books. His favorite part about the park were the dueling squirrels and the random guy playing the pan flute. He was happy to see daddy when he came home from his golf game.

We all went out to lunch and did the weekly grocery shopping, then Enzo took a nice log nippy nap. After he woke up from his nap, he had a snack and a little Nemo, then we went off to visit Nacho. We had a nice dinner, even though Enzo loaded up on too many slices of pear and snap pea crisps at Nacho's house and had no interest in the dinner mommy made. He had fun running around the house with Wes after dinner.

We waited a little too long before bath, and he got upset but was OK after his bath and bottle. Mommy read Enzo many stories before bed as per usual.

September 08, 2007

nacho

Enzo woke up had his milk and then cried for 20 minutes about who knows what. It’s something that he’s been doing every time he wakes up in the morning and from naps the last week or so. We played with crayons, read some books, and played in a big cardboard box which calmed him down and distracted him from whatever he was upset about.

We headed out to Peets for coffee and breakfast. Enzo sat in his stroller and ate a big meal, then walked around. Right before we left, some 3 yo girl walked up Enzo, stuck her hand in his face and pushed him to the ground. He was shocked. On the way home, he fell asleep so I drove him around for about 30 minutes while he slept.

Mommy came home from after a loooong night in the hospital, and rushed off to a parent orientation meeting for Enzo. He starts his infant toddler program at the Pasadena Waldorf school on Wednesday. Apparently, mommy and daddy have been sorely lacking in their parenting skills thus far but its never too late to turn it around, we guess. We are looking forward to bringing him. Mommy was brave and signed up for snack duty for the first day.

After the orientation, mommy went to Wes' house, where daddy and Enzo were waiting, to meet their new 8 week French bulldog puppy named Nacho. She is the cutest little thing. Enzo was very enamored with her as well, but was sort of more interested in playing with the dog crate. At one point, Enzo and Wes walked in to the bedroom, turned on the radio, and danced together to a Cheap Trick song. Enzo went off for a nice afternoon nap afterwards, but woke up seeming like he needed more sleep.

In the afternoon we went to the pet store for supplies and it was like going to the zoo, only smaller - he was fascinated with all the fish and small mammals and birds. He pointed out Nemo when he saw the clownfish, and said "bird" when he saw the parakeets. He called the rats a cat. Dinner was pasta with Nacho and her new family. Enzo seemed right on the edge of meltdown the entire day - teething, maybe, or a general sleep deficiency? He had a nice bath, peed in his potty, lots of books, then off to an early bedtime.

September 07, 2007

pop pop pop

OK, one last poop story and that's it. This morning after milk, Enzo was sitting with Zoe reading books, and he started saying "pop, pop, pop" over and over. Zoe's thinking that weird that he's saying "pop", and then she realizes Enzo doesn't mean "pop, pop, pop", he means "poop, poop, poop"! So she rushes him over to the potty, and sure enough - poop!

Enzo and I took the dogs to day care after the big BM, and then stopped at Starbucks for a coffee and croissant. Back home just in time to meet Alex at the door.

Nanny Note: We played with toys in Enzo's room, watched a little bit of Nemo, played outside, colored with crayons and played with Playdough. We went to the library for story time. We went to Grandma Jeans to see another new kitten and have lunch. When we got back we played outside with the water table and chalk. At 4:45 I let him watch Nemo again.

Zoe on call tonight. The landscapers came to talk about the front yard project we're thinking about. I left Enzo in front of Nemo for a bit because he wasn't interested in talking about the front yard. In fact he cried when I brought him out there. Finally, I put Enzo in the backpack and finished the conversation with the landscaper while passing Pirate's Booty over my shoulder to Enzo.

After they left, we walked up to Wesley's house for dinner and a play date. The kids did OK with dinner. Wesley was imitating Enzo's little scat singing riff "dibba dabba dibbity dap". Enzo was more interested in squishing his food and letting his water run out of his mouth and down his shirt, than eating. No kissing tonight, but there was a little dancing. After dinner, we sat in Wesley's room and read some books and played with toys.

Enzo was ready for his bath right away when we got home. He got upset while I was putting his clothes on but settled down with his bottle of milk and a stack of books. He only napped for one hour today, so was in bed asleep by 7:30. Another early morning tomorrow.

September 06, 2007

arancini

Advance apologies for another post filled with Enzo poop stories. Usual routine with Enzo - Rose Bowl, then yummy breakfast at home. Mommy had to leave early for the OR this morning.

Milestones: As he walked through the downstairs bathroom tonight, Enzo pointed at his potty, looked up at me, and said "poop".

Nanny Note: We played with blocks, puzzle, chalk and we played at the park by Kidspace. When we got home we played in the water sang songs, read books and watched Nemo for a little while

When we got home this afternoon, Enzo was still out rumpusing with Alex at Gymboree. He came home in a very good mood, very talkative and silly. Wes and her family came over to rehash the business meeting daddy and Wes' dad had today. Things look very promising.

Wesley and Enzo spent a lot of time in his room and some time jumping around in his crib. After they left, Zoe attempted dinner with Enzo but he was very distracted, and he ended up squishing his beautiful arancini all over the place and only had a few bites. Later, we thought he was trying to play with his potty - Ralph had taken the insert out of it and Enzo was acting like he wanted to step in it so we scolded him and took it away - a minute later the poor kid took a poop in his diaper. We feel like he was trying to let us know he wanted to poop on the potty but his dense parents just didn't get it! AND he got scolded!

He got very tired early and went to bed about an hour before his usual bedtime. See you at 5 am, Enzer.

September 05, 2007

uuuuup?

Enzo and daddy took the the dogs to the Rose Bowl, but the guy was mowing with the big tractor so I didn't let Enzo run around. We came back early to eat the french toast that mommy made for Enzo. He did OK with breakfast but was much more interested in just licking the syrup off of the chunks of french toast than actually eating it. Everything was "on" this morning. He must have said it 50 times.

Milestones: Enzo is constantly saying "up, that, on and hot" these days. Whenever he says "up", he says it as a question, and really drags out the U. Enzo also knows how to make monkey noises and roar like a lion when asked to do so.

Nanny Note: We watched Nemo, read books and played with water then we went to Gymboree. The last 15 minutes were hard though because he wanted to leave. Enzo liked his lunch today and he also liked mashing it up and throwing it on the floor. Some got in though. After lunch we played in the pool and watched a little bit of Nemo again. We played at Kidspace after nap.

After work, Zoe and I took turns rolling around on the couch with Enzo. Then I took him for a walk to say hi to Wes. We stopped and played in the sandbox, and then went home for a big fish taco dinner. We thought Enzo needed to use the potty about half way through dinner (false alarm) and then we couldn't really get back to being focused about eating.

After dinner, when Zoe turned on the water to wash his hands, he said "on" yet again. Typical after dinner routine of some playing and then reading and then bath (a very deep one tonight) and then bottle and more books with mommy. The AC was fixed today, so we're all going to sleep well tonight. It's also actually kind of cold out tonight. Heat wave finally over.

September 04, 2007

ac

Enzo was up at 3:AM then 4:AM then 5:30AM. We let him try to work it out for a few hours, but eventually got to the point where we knew he wasn't going back to sleep, so went in and rescued him. He used the potty for his morning movement again as he's done every morning since we got it.

The dogs had fun running in the long grass at the Rose Bowl, and Enzo had fun walking around trying to pick up bits of trash people left behind from some Labor Day party. Some one had moved a big park bench out into the middle of the field, and Enzo played on and around it the entire time.

Nanny Note: We stayed inside all morning. We read books, played with his new puzzle, watched Wild Things and played in his room. After nap we went to Kidspace to eat lunch and play in the indoor playroom. We played with water for a while. Enzo is getting so good at pouring water. He likes watching the wheel go around.

When Zoe and I got back to the house after work, we realized that the AC was basically dead. It was a little cooler tonight than the past few days but still 86 degrees upstairs in Enzo's room. It was too late to check into a hotel so we just put Enzo to sleep in nothing but a diaper, and turned the fan toward him. AC repair man coming tomorrow. Before bed, Enzo and mommy spnt some time looking for gold bug again. He is soooo good now, finding gold bug on the page before we do.

September 03, 2007

sofa king hot

What a long, hot, hot day. We started very early - Enzo got up at 530 this morning and took a poop in the potty. We had awesome sour cream banana pancakes that Zoe made, then went off for coffee in Silverlake. It was beyond hot, even at 930 in the morning.

We went furniture shopping afterwards, and tried to manage in the sweltering armpit that is Pasadena, but eventually the heat won and we sought shelter in the house. This would have been fine except that the air conditioner died. Ralph eventually revived it using an age-old Macgyver technique of twisting some twine around the broken pipe, but once the house finally cooled off, believe it or not, the power went out. We were in the throes of making reservations at the local Westin, when Pasadena Water and Power came to the rescue and the power was restored.

We had fish tacos for dinner that we were supposed to have with the Metcalfs for labor day. Enzo loved his panna cotta with balsamic strawberries for dessert. Despite the oppressive, ritual suicide inducing heat today, Enzo managed to stay cheerful and upbeat for most of the day. He tried hard to say "pirate" tonight in the bathtub.

September 02, 2007

goldbug

Enzo started his day bright and early, as usual, at about 6 am. He had some milk and a snuggy with daddy, then went on a walk around the block with the dogs. Enzo fed himself his entire breakfast using the spoon and did not make much of a mess at all, surprisingly. Betty was mightily disappointed. Daddy went off (to kick some butt!!) at golf, and Enzo and mommy went to Peet's for some coffee and fun. He fell asleep in the car afterwards, and Zoe drove around San Marino and Pasadena for 30 minutes so he could sleep.

Afterwards, they went to Katie's house and Enzo rumpused with Gabe and Luke. He especially liked being pushed in the swing, and babbled his nonsense the entire time. Afterwards, mommy and Enzo came home, read a ton of books and hung out, had a small lunch with a big mess, then watched some N-e-m-o (we can no longer say this out loud, because he will go over to the tv and cry until we turn it on). His favorite thing to do now is to look for the Goldbug, which appears in a different spot on every page of Richard Scarry's book, Cars and Trucks and Things That Go. When daddy came home, Enzo was ready for his nap, which lasted almost 2 hours.

After his nap, we ichatted with Grandma Buzz and Dee. He got to ichat with A-ma yesterday, and is getting used to babbling into the computer. He even blew them a kiss. We later got an SOS call from Wes et al, who were stuck in the house because of the oppressive heat in Pasadena. We brought over some Pinkberry yogurt, then went to Whole Foods for our weekly grocery run. Enzo got into the Pirate's Booty before we paid for it. We went over to Wes' house for dinner tonight, and Wes and Enzo would not stop kissing each other...very very very cute. After some serious running around and squealing and dancing and kissing, he came to a screeching (literally) halt, had a quick bath, 3 books, some toothbrushing, then bed almost an hour earlier than usual. We plan on an early start tomorrow.

September 01, 2007

a hole is to dig

Enzo up early again, and again I went in to give him a bottle and let him sleep another hour laying on me. Once we all finally got up, we headed over to Peets to grab some food and coffees to go and then we off to the beach. Despite arriving at 8:30, the parking lot was already full and we waited a while for a spot.

Enzo and I headed down to the water, while Zoe caught some rays. We dug a big hole, which filled up with water, and then we sat in it. The tide was coming in, so kept having to move back and dig another and another. Maya showed up with her parents, and she joined in the sand digging project. We went back up the beach to have a snack with mommy, and then back down the water to play some more. It stared to get hot, so we packed up. Before we left, I carried Enzo out into the surf with no diaper to rinse off his sandy butt.

It was unbelievably hot in Pasadena when we got back to town. We stopped at a new Italian deli place and picked up lunch which we ate at home. The ac was working overtime today. I think it reached 103°. Ugh.

After lunch, Enzo went down for a long two hour nap, and so did mommy and daddy. We braved the heat and walked around the block to see Wes, who was also holed up in her air conditioned house. Zoe fixed Enzo a big icy sippy cup of water with a little juice mixed in for the walk. The juice was a little extra incentive to drink and stay hydrated. Enzo took one sip and then pretty clearly said "apple juice", which is weird because we never give him juice. Hmmmm. He said it again several times. Enzo and Wes shared some snacks, playdough, and crayons, and had fun playing together.

Back home, Zoe ran to get some dinner while Enzo and I played in the pool. Enzo was really hungry by the time we ate and he scarfed down his noodles. Not long after dinner, Enzo was ready for his bath. Zoe read him few books, and he was ready for bed early. Pretty sure I'll be seeing him again at 5:AM tomorrow.

Supposed to be 107° tomorrow.
