so very interesting

Enzo woke up at 5:30AM, and I was soooo bummed. But the time I got his milk and got back up stairs he'd fallen back asleep, and then slept until almost 8:AM. Unheard of! Maybe it's because he knew it was a cold rainy day. We didn't have much time with him this morning. Just enough to make him a quick breakfast before Alex came.

Nanny Note: We looked at the shark book, we pretended to make tea, we watched Nemo for a little while and then when the cleaning ladies came we went to Amy's Playground. We got a smoothie at Jamba Juice. We went to Grandma Jeans to visit for a couple hours. Grandma Jean gave Enzo a gummi turtle.

Dark, cold and rainy tonight, so we didn't go out. We just watched some sharks, played in Enzo's little house, and ate some dinner. I broke out a new toob of zoo animals near the end of dinner, which Enzo was very excited about.

He had a very hot bath, followed by very cold bottle of milk. Zoe read him books, and I made him a tunnel with his legos. He tried to play "isn't it so very interesting" right before bedtime. Pointing out all his little animals to us one by one, saying "wow" and "oooh". We played along for a while because it was so cute.

school daze

We went to Heirloom for breakfast this morning. Zoe and I traded off watching Enzo play with his turtles in the dirt and eating breakfast. Enzo sat for a bit and ate some fruit and quiche before we left.

Zoe went on to work, and Enzo and I went to get Jamba Juice. Then we drove over to the construction site, where we sat on the wall, drinking our juice. The construction site was very busy today. Enzo really liked the front loader that was moving gravel around. We stopped in Borders across the street and then headed up to school. Enzo fell asleep on the way there, and stayed asleep for about an hour.

He had a great day at school for the most part. He really got into opening circle, doing some of the hand motions at the beginning, and then he laid on the floor gazing up at Adrienne singing songs. For the first time he didn't ask to go outside or drink milk halfway through class. Instead he just kept playing and say "hi!" to everyone ten times, until it was time for snack. He sat for a long time today, and ate a lot. He asked for a third portion of mandarin oranges before dumping out his bowl. We went outside to play with the class, but when it was time to come back in for closing circle, he didn't want to leave the sand pile. I picked him up and brought him to the door, but he got upset, so we just left rather than force the issue. We went home, and Alex came at about 1:30 to take him.

Nanny Note: We watched Planet Earth, sang some songs, ate lunch and went to Gymboree for a while. He had fun then started asking for milk (which I didn't have) so we came home.

Zoe came home and made dinner, while Enzo and I watched sharks. After dinner, we just sat around reading books and playing with puzzles. We went on a very short walk with the dogs. After bath, Zoe read Enzo a stack of books. He was falling asleep in her lap so we brushed his teeth and put him to sleep a few minutes early.

November 28, 2007

that's a gibbon

We went to Cindy's for a family breakfast this morning and he did so well - ate a lot of food without making a mess and sat sweetly in his chair the entire time. Mommy went to work and daddy went home with Enzo

Nanny Note: We looked at the fish book, played with trains. Enzo played outside in the dirt and then we went to the zoo. At the zoo, we saw three tortoises eating and yawning, the snow leopards meowing and the gibbons screaming. The gibbons were soooo loud today, it was hysterical. We watched the black bears eat salad and the baby tigers sleep then we played at the park for awhile. We also saw the jaguar eating a meaty bone. I tried to get him to take another nap but he was not sleepy so we played in his room and went to Gymboree for awhile

When mommy got home he was happy to see her and tell her about his day - he covered his ears and said "loud!" and "mon-eys!" (monkeys). We had dinner then daddy took Enzo to PetCo to look at the animals again. Its hard because it gets dark so early these days - not much to do in the hours between dinner and bedtime - daddy and Enzo saw several young families at PetCo doing the same thing they were. When he's seen enough of one animal, and is ready to move on to the next one, he says "no", which at first made me think he didn't want to be there at all. He really likes the salt water fish, especially the clown fish. He calls the chameleon - "eyes".

We had a fun bath, lots of books, then an early bedtime for Enzo.

November 27, 2007

d o g spells dog

Early this morning an ambulance went by the house with sirens blaring. It woke Enzo up, but he just turned his music back on and went back to sleep for another hour. When he finally got up, we went downstairs for waffles. Then we spent some time playing and reading before Alex showed up.

Nanny Note: We played at Garfield Park and went to school. Enzo did very well at school. When we got home we watched Planet Earth, had a snack and played with the train set, then we went to the library to play with toys and read books. Enzo played outside in the dirt for about an hour.

Enzo was nuts when I got home. Running around screeching and chasing the dogs. After he settled down, we read some books waiting for mommy to come home. After dinner, we sat on the couch reading books about fish, turtles (eating "grass"), sharks, and firemen.

Just before going up to take a bath, Zoe noticed there were some words that Alex had spelled out with magnet letters on the fridge. She called Enzo over and asked him what the words were, and he quickly went down the list - "cat", "meow" and "no". We were amazed that he remembered the words so easily.

Then as a goof, I spelled out a new word. D O G. And asked him "what's this word?"

He pointed at the word, turned to Zoe and said "dog".

November 26, 2007

grass

Enzo turned on his music and then quietly hung out in his crib for a while this morning. When we finally went in, he was in the sweetest mood. He snuggled with Zoe and then asked to read some books after milk. Soon after coming downstairs, Enzo was out in the front yard playing in the dirt pile. At one point he just laid back in the dirt, staring up at the sky. He had sliced lox ("samon") and bagels this morning.

Nanny Note: We went to Kidspace. Enzo got to visit with Sherman the box turtle and Rudy the Australian Bearded Dragon. We played for hours then we came home to watch Planet Earth. We spent a long time coloring the play house. Later we played at the park.

Enzo had a short early nap today, and when I got him from Alex around 5:PM, he was tired and upset. As I carried him around, he buried his head against my shoulder and cried. I made him laugh a few times, pretending to drink his juice and showing the fire captain's mustache, and he quickly settled down. He was happy to see Zoe when she got home from work, and rushed into the kitchen to say hi.

Zoe made his all-time favorite pancetta pasta tonight, and he ate a big pile of it. After dinner, Enzo chased the dogs, and read some more books with Zoe. He got a new turtle book today. His favorite picture is the sea turtle eating "grass". In fact he pretty much only wants to look at that one picture, and say "grass" over and over.

After bath, Zoe read another stack of books, including Alligators All Around, which she sang four or five times. Before bed, Enzo and made up a new game hiding little animals under his stacking cups. We stacked and then lifted the cups looking, of course, for the "turdle!"

November 25, 2007

haircut

Zoe woke up and made crepes this morning. Enzo and I shared one with bananas, strawberries and nutella. After breakfast we went on a family walk around Poppy Peak, then came home and played in the front yard dirt pile.

Enzo watch some giant salamanders on tv and then we went to the park for some "climbing" and "i slide!". We chased squirrels (they don't like cheerios), and rolled down the grassy hill. Zoe had to sing, yell, and poke Enzo all the way home, so he didn't fall asleep in the car.

It was easy putting Enzo down for his nap, but for some reason, he woke up suddenly only about 40 minutes into it. He was still so tired, and he fell asleep in my arms for another ten minutes or so. But when he woke up again, he sure was sour. I gave him some milk, and took him for a short drive which calmed him down.

Back at the house, we all played in the backyard with the dogs for a long time. We also managed to take a couple potential holiday card photos while we were at it. Enzo loves to play with Betty, who of course is always ready to play. Sometime it's hard for him to get the ball from Betty. He follows her around the yard, yelling "come" and "drop". Enzo picks up the slimy ball, cocks his arm, yells "i throw!", and let's it fly.

Enzo had a snack, and we headed over to get his hair cut. It was really getting out of control. We happened to get the nicest woman who gave Enzo the best haircut ever. Enzo was so good sitting in daddy's lap in the chair. Might have been the lollipop and video on the tv. We can't believe how much older he looks now.

Back home, we played in the dirt more and then played with the dogs again. The Pfleegers came over for fish tacos, and then Wes and Enzo played in his cardboard house.

Enzo took a nice long bath as per usual, and then books with mommy. He hasn't lost his touch finding Goldbug despite not seeing it for a while.

November 24, 2007

coot

Enzo woke us up with his music again, and was in a sweet mood. It was so cold this morning, he wanted to play outside in the big pile of dirt and peat that was delivered a few days ago. We bundled him up and let him sit in the pile with his trowel and shovel and the dogs and he was in heaven. Mommy made him a small cup of his first hot chocolate. We tried to take our Christmas photo, but couldn't get all of them to cooperate at once. We will try again tomorrow.

After his dirt and hot chocolate, we cleaned up and headed out for some breakfast. He had some fruit and had fun watching the trains. We tried to see the crane, but they weren't working today. We went to the bookstore and he picked out a shark book.

We tried to get his hair cut but he got tired and we realized it was an exercise in futility. We went to Play-Well to get our backyard playground order in - we were told to get the order in well before Christmas so we would avoid the rush. We are very excited!

At home we watched some Planet Earth - he was particularly enamored with a giant salamander from Japan as well as the river otters and the fresh water fish. He had some lunch then took a nice long nap.

We took a walk after his nap - we had planned to walk down to the Rose Bowl in order to get a look at the blimp, but the game ended as we were heading down and the blimp flew directly overhead on its way home. Enzo was so excited to see it so close and so loud. We fed the ducks and Enzo quacked and quacked even though he was too nervous to give the big duck any bread himself. He has been nipped once too many times! He surprised us by pointing to the coots and saying, "coot". Even Zoe did not know what they were.

We had a nice dinner out and he ate well. We went to the pet store after dinner for kitty litter and he got to see the turtles, lizards, chinchillas, fish, and mice...but his absolute favorite was the chameleon with its googly eyes. He couldn't say "chameleon" but he would say "eye"

He was funny and sweet all day today.

November 23, 2007

that's wac

Zoe read books to Enzo when he woke up, and then we all went downstairs for a pancake breakfast. Zoe left early for work, and Enzo and I just hung around the house playing with the cardboard house.

Nanny Note: We read books, played in the playhouse and watched Planet Earth. We played outside for a while after lunch. Before nap we read more books. After nap we colored the house and went to the park. While we were at the park, Enzo fell and bumped his head. I put ice on it for a minute.

After letting Alex go, Enzo and I drove out to get the dogs, while Zoe made dinner. Enzo was in such a happy mood when we got home despite the giant goose egg on his forehead. We hung out, played in his new house (he pointed out the new drawings on the house including the drawing of the cat in the back), read some books, chased Betty around, wrestled on the bed and was generally very silly but happy. He ate very little of his dinner but shockingly enough rallied enough to finish his pop.

We had a nice warm bath and watched some of the UH football game (2007 WAC champions and undefeated!). Enzo was excited to watch the game. Karen and JJ came over just in time to say hi to Enzo before he went to bed. They noticed how much taller he has gotten since the last time they saw him. Enzo was super shy and did not say much except to yell "YO!" after someone on tv caught a ball. At about 8:15, he put down the cracker he had been chewing on, and started up the stairs. I asked him if he was ready to go to bed, and he said "yesch", so we brushed his teeth and he went right to sleep.

November 22, 2007

turkey

Enzo and I went to Cindy's for breakfast this morning. It was so foggy this morning driving down the hill. We were the only people there at first. Enzo ate a nice big breakfast of his usual silver dollar pancakes and peaches. Back home, we just goofed around until Zoe came home.

Mommy was so happy to see Enzo. He was running in and out of his cardboard house and pulled her into the house first thing. They had fun opening all the windows.

Mommy and daddy got started on the Thanksgiving cooking they had to do while Enzo watched a little bit of Planet Earth. A-ma invited us to ichat, and she had her mom and sister with her (Enzo's great grandmother and great-aunt) They had a nice time ichatting, even though Enzo was shy at first. But he really got into it and showed off his belly button and gave A-ma some kisses. After we said goodbye, while mommy was making Enzo some lunch, he kept saying A-ma, A-ma, so we invited them to ichat again. There is nothing that chinese women like more than to see a relative eat, especially when it is an only grandson/greatgrandson eat noodles with a pair of chopsticks. They clapped after he took each bite and Enzo was mightily amused. He even said E-ma (Chinese for great aunt). Many kisses later we said goodbye.

Mommy and Enzo read a bunch of books together while daddy took the pups on a walk, then we packed up our beautiful apple pie and gorgeous pumpkin cheesecake and drove to Manhattan Beach for dinner with Leah, Paul, Maya and Michael.

Enzo had a healthy nap in the car and was in a chipper mood when he woke up. We had an AMAZING dinner that Leah slaved over, with little Michael tethered to her hip all the while. Turkey, potatoes, yams, cranberries, gravy - yum. Enzo especially liked the whipped yams. Dessert was decadent and delicious and Enzo even got a little bit of ice cream.

After we got home we had the usual bath, books and bed right on time. Enzo said "love you" to mommy for the first time tonight. We are thankful for our happy and healthy little bug.

November 21, 2007

house

Enzo was up at his usual 6:30AM. We just hung around the house this morning — playing, reading, and eating cereal. I took Enzo and the girls for a walk, while mommy got ready for work. We got back in time to say "bye bye". Right after mommy left, we took a short trike ride down the block and back.

Nanny Note: We read books till about 10, watched Planet earth, then we walked around the neighborhood for about an hour. Before nap, we read more books and watched Good Night Gorilla. After nap we had a snack then we went to visit Grandma Jean.

Enzo was playing in the dirt in the front yard with Alex when I got home this evening. Zoe is on call tonight, so Enzo and I got some dinner together. His on-call dinners are usually pretty random, and tonight was no exception. Bologna, rice, edamame, and pears. And a cookie. He actually did OK, and didn't beg for a "pop" tonight.

After dinner, we assembled Enzo's new cardboard playhouse. He really enjoyed it. We both sat inside for a long time, commenting on how "dark" it was inside, that the doors and windows were "closed", and discussing the similarities between a "house" and a "tunnoh". Betty and Harriet both spent some time inside there too, not necessarily by their own choosing. Enzo chased Betty out of the house yelling "down". And he kept chasing her around the living room, laughing and screeching the whole time.

After the house, we briefly watched some "fisch" and "turdle" on Planet Earth. We took a nice long bath, and then read some books, including Madeline, of course, and an old standby Blankie ("blankt").

We played with his little bugs, reptiles, and dinosaurs. At several of the schools I toured, they used these little animals to teach kids about diversity and taxonomic similarities. Mixing all the critters up, and asking the kids to sort them into piles of similar animals.

We also played a brief game of fake owie on mommy's bed. After I brushed his teeth, he gave me big kiss, and curled up his crib, ready for "night night".

November 20, 2007

quiche

Enzo woke up and wanted to read books with mommy right away. Then he wanted to dig in the dirt in the front yard, while mommy made breakfast. He was more interested in driving his trucks around in the egg yolk on the table, but at least he sat his chair for a long time.

Nanny Note: We went to the park to play the on the way to school, Enzo fell asleep. I couldn't wake him, he was so groggy, so when he woke up we came home. We ate snack, watched Planet Earth and then played at Amy's.

When Zoe came home, we worked on getting dinner together while Enzo watched "shark", "turdle" and "fisch". The Pfleegers came over around 5. Enzo was very eager to show off his trains and tunnel ("tunnoh"). He was kind of a nightmare at dinner, throwing food all over the place, without eating a bite. Even though he kept yelling, "quiche, quiche, quiche", he didn't really want any. I think he was showing off for Wes. After dinner, the kids just goofed around, playing with trains, puzzles, and books.

He was very sweet tonight during our usual wind down to bedtime. He read books with mommy, and then looked at pictures in his new animal encyclopedia that daddy got him. Of course, he kept wanting to go back to the shark and turtle pages.

November 19, 2007

baboon

We knew Enzo was awake this morning because we heard his music turn on over the monitor. When we went in he was dancing alone in the dark in his crib to his music. Funny kid. We had french toast this morning and he managed to eat without much protest. Mommy had to leave early for work. We tried to go to the Rose Bowl to play fetch, but they were working on the field, so we came home and went for a walk instead.

Nanny Note: We went to the zoo. We saw the tigers, gorillas, lions, giraffes, bears, gibbons, tortoise and alligator. Enzo loved the tortoise ("turdle") the most. We had lunch and played at the park at the top of the hill. Enzo fell asleep in the car on the way home. We watched Planet Earth and went to Grandma Jean's. Enzo ran around playing with the cat.

When mommy came home, Enzo was happy to see her and went running into the kitchen and asked for a kiss right away. Then in his next breath he asked to watch the fish on tv. Funny that he had been home with daddy for awhile before mommy came home and he didn't mention the tv at all. I guess we know who the push over is.

He did great with dinner, and ate his pasta and ribs. He managed to gnaw on a little riblet. After dinner we played with his trains for a long time then he sat on the couch with mommy and went through the entire Jolviet ZOO-ology book and he pointed at and named as many animals as he could. He impressed mommy because he knew "baboon".

We had a nice bath, then read lots of books (his current favorite is Madeline, which mommy loves because of all the Paris pictures), then played with his pile of frogs, dinosaurs, insects and turtles. We are looking forward to seeing him in the morning.

November 18, 2007

bronco

We started off using mommy's Christmas present from last year - the fancy crepe maker that daddy got her. We had a fabulous crepe extravaganza this morning and while maybe Enzo was more interested in the strawberries, the crepes were awesome. We ichatted with Grandpa Buzz and later he said, quite clearly, "gampa Buzz!" We headed off to the Boston Terrier meetup and the park and we had a great time. We got home and had some lunch.

We ran some family errands, and Enzo took another 2 hour nap afterwards. We were talking about how Buzz thought the playground set cost $15,000 and we thought that was "nuts!" Enzo said "nuts!" for the rest of the afternoon.

Before dinner Enzo ran around in the backyard with the pups and was throwing the ball for Betty. He started throwing the ball into the big planters and Betty would jump in and grab the ball and he thought it was the funniest thing. He did great with dinner, although we had to resort to the age old airplane-flying-into-the-hangar-with-a-chunk-of-turkey-meatloaf-hanging-off-it trick.

After dinner we played with trains, wrestled around on mommy's bed and learned how to jump, played bucking bronco with daddy (Enzo says "bronco"). We the usual bath, books and bedtime right on time.

November 17, 2007

elves

Enzo woke up in a chipper mood, enjoyed his breakfast of eggs, sausage and papaya and we went off to play at the park. After the park we spent some time at the Waldorf school's annual fundraiser Elves' Faire. There was lots to see and do, and Enzo especially loved the live music (particularly the string quartet - Suzuki method here we come!) as well as the weird elves milling around with crazy things hanging off them. He got to see Miss Adrienne and some of his classmates.

When we got home, we had some lunch and watched some Planet Earth while daddy dealt with the nightmare that is the wall project. Today is the great sprinkler installation nightmare. Enzo took a whopping 2 hour and 15 minute nap which gave mommy the opportunity to do her Thanksgiving shopping.

Unlike this morning, Enzo woke up in a super sour mood after his nap and had one of his inexplicable meltdowns. We let him writhe around on the floor in the living room to work it out, checking on him every minute or so to let him know we were still around but not giving him any extra attention. It seemed to work - he got over it after about 10 minutes then was fine.

We had a great dinner and afterwards ran some family errands in Old Pasadena. Afterwards we played a rousing game of hide and go seek and Enzo played "Bucking Bronco" on daddy and mommy and he thought it was the greatest thing. The dogs were confused and while daddy was on all fours with Enzo riding on his back, they were attacking him and biting his arms and feet. Enzo loved that best of all.

November 16, 2007

gamma jeeen

Enzo woke up and ate a half of papaya for breakfast, and then we drove out to drop the dogs at day care. On the way home, we stopped for Jamba Juice and coffee. Enzo kept saying "juice juice juice" until the guy handed it to him.

Milestones: After a strong start, Enzo hasn't been on the potty much the last three weeks or so, but tonight he pooped in the big boy toilet for the first time. He raised his hands over his head victoriously and screeched with delight. Seems like he doesn't want anything to do with the baby potty anymore.

Nanny Note: We walked around the neighborhood, dug in the dirt and walked our visit the kittens. Enzo had a good time at Grandma Jean's. When we got home we watched Planet Earth then we took off for the day. We went to Grandma Jean's for lunch and to the park to play. Enzo slept in the car for a while then we watched the crane working over on Green Street by Ralphs.

Alex told me that when they went to see Grandma Jean today, he pointed at her and said "gamma jeeeen!". Grandma Jean was thrilled.

After work, Zoe and I took Enzo to Whole Foods to get dinner and milk. Enzo didn't eat much dinner but he enjoyed his tapioca pudding and chocolate milk, a treat he's only had twice in his life. Back home, we watched "shark" and "turdle" on the Planet Earth DVD, then took a bath. Enzo had fun dumping water on daddy's head, and didn't get upset when I dumped it on his. Mommy read him some books, and we played "trot trot".

November 15, 2007

man jump splash

Family outing to get coffee and see the crane this morning. Enzo was happy as per usual. Some good crane and heavy equipment action today.

Alex took Enzo to play at the park and then met me up at school around 11:AM. Enzo had another good day at school, following the usual pattern of wanting some milk about half way through class and then re-joining and continuing on with no problem. He was kind of goofy today, running around with a little wooden duck, yelling "duck!" at anyone who would listen. He was also into falling down and rolling around on the floor being silly a lot today too. He dumped his snack bowl in the trash almost immediately, and then just ran around yelling while the other kids sat and ate. We played outside in the dirt pile, and then came back in for some serious "trot trot".

Nanny Note: We went to the park to play. Enzo enjoyed watching the squirrels play in the trees above. After school we had lunch, painted and watched Planet Earth then we went to Gymboree to play.

Enzo and I went to see Zoe on call tonight. We had our usual beefy thai omelet with "pea", which Enzo loves. He was very sweet and cute just hanging out in the call room. Gave mommy some nice little kisses too.

He stayed awake on the way home which was good. We saw three fire trucks go zooming by when we got off the freeway, "truck".

Enzo took a very long bath tonight. We played the man jumping off the edge of the tub into the water game for about 15 minutes. He can say "jump", "splash" and "man". It was getting late so we only read a few books before brushing teeth and hitting the sack.

November 14, 2007

4ever in blue jeans

Enzo started his day laughing his ass off at Betty and Mr chasing after the laser light. We love hearing his big belly laugh - when he throws his head back and laughs and laughs. It doesn't happen a lot. He ate some of breakfast, including some cold lumpy oatmeal which was surprising. We played with his trains then daddy took him for a walk around the neighborhood.

Nanny Note: We played with Playdough, read books and watched Planet earth. Yesterday he was fascinated by the sharks, so when we went to Kidspace we looked at books about sharks. We went to visit Grandma Jean. Enzo played with the kittens as usual, when we got home we had a snack, watched Planet Earth, read stories and then I put him to bed. He fell asleep pretty fast without any complaining, and slept for over two hours!

We got home early today to find him decorating leaves in the kitchen nook with Alex. We had a lot of fun playing at the park this afternoon - he is getting so good at climbing and sliding. We played out in the front yard with his trucks and gardening tools. He ate a hot dog while waiting for dinner, then picked at his dinner but found time for a fruit bar afterwards.

We ran around with the dogs, had a nice bath, tried to poop on the big potty (no such luck), had some milk and lots of books before bed.

November 13, 2007

meat pop

Enzo and I took the dogs to play fetch, while Zoe made him breakfast. We had fun at the soccer fields, but after about 25 minutes, Enzo pointed toward the car and said "home", so we went home.

Alex came by to take Ezno to the park, and I got myself ready to meet them up at school. As I was leaving the house, I noticed that Betty was limping. There was a bee stinger in her paw, and her face was starting to swell up rapidly. I rushed her to the vet, where she got a few shots. She's still swollen up a bit but OK.

Enzo had a great day at school. He asked for his milk right after opening circle, so I gave it to him and he was fine for the rest of class. He spent a lot of time handing toys to Miss Adrienne, sweeping, and pushing the little stroller around the room. He was anxious for snack to start, and then couldn't wait to get up and dump his food into the trash bin. He quickly regretted that decision, so I gave him another chance to sit and eat. After snack, we played outside for a few minutes, but he asked to go back inside. He helped Miss Adrienne wipe the table and chairs, and she was very happy about that. He loved the "trot trot" closing circle, and held Miss Adriene's hand in closing circle.

Nanny Note: We played at the park in the morning. After school we watched Planet Earth and played at Kidspace.

Enzo was kind of nuts after Alex dropped him off tonight. He was up and down from his seat and dinner a few times without eating much. He got mad that we were sitting at the table too. Zoe did trick him to get back in his chair for a few more minutes by giving him a lamb chop (aka, meat pop) to gnaw on. After dinner he continued to act out a bit. Not sure why.

He settled down after his bath some. We let him watch the sharks on the Planet Earth DVD, and he drank his milk. We went back up to his room to read some books. We were just hanging out when he got up, walked up his crib, pointed, and said "night night". So we quickly brushed his teeth, and put him in the crib.

November 12, 2007

tricks for a-ma

Enzo had a great day. We had buttermilk waffles to start and for once Enzo did not wipe syrup all over the dogs. We played in the front yard for awhile afterwards and when mommy left for work, Enzo kept making his kissy face at her, so she had to stop the car, get out, and give him a kiss. This went on for 3 kisses until she finally had to drive away.

Nanny Note: We rode around the neighborhood on his bike, played in the dirt, read books, played with toys and watched Knuffle Bunny and played with puzzles. Enzo woke up in a sad mood. :( We went to KidSpace to play.

After Enzo and Alex came home from kidspace, A-ma and Andy came over for a visit. Enzo was shy at first but ended up in a funny silly mood. He ran through a long list of tricks at the table — animals names and sounds, pointing to various body parts, and learning everyone's name. He did not eat much and A-ma was shocked at what a mess he made despite his small appetite. He did, however, finish his "pop". After dinner, Enzo impressed everyone with mastery of his puzzles, some dancing, and more words from one of his books. A-ma kept asking for kisses, and Enzo would reply, "no!" then A-ma would say, "yes!" and then Enzo would say, "no!" and so on and so on. Not a game we wanted him to learn, but eventually he gave A-ma several very sweet hugs and kisses. He high-fived Andy.

We had our usual bubbly bath, books and rolling around before bed right at 8.

November 11, 2007

crabby

We had a great weekend, despite the fact that little Enzo Koji got up at 530 this morning and was ready to go. We ichatted with grandma Dee first, and it was sweet even though Enzo was shy at first. We did our weekly shopping, and Enzo was a champ in the cart the entire time, although we had to entice him into hanging in there for the last 5 minutes. Ah, the power of chocolate milk.

We toodled around the neighborhood on his trike, played with his trains, read books, ichatted with grandpa Buzz. He took a 2 hour nap today, the likes of which we have not seen in a long time. He woke up in a happy mood.

We went back to PlayWell to figure out the configuration of Enzo's playground set. He was climbing on everything and was absolutely fearless. Daddy had him climbing up a climbing wall until mommy made him stop.

We had a great dinner of Dungeness crab and homemade mac and cheese for Enzo. He was fascinated with the crab carapace, and said "crab" over and over. He was holding onto a donut hole left over from breakfast and it was hilarious to watch him try to keep it away from Betty and Harriet. He was telling them both "no! no!" over and over and Harriet and Betty didn't mind at all.

After his blue poop in the potty (leftover from his blueberry dinner last night) and his very bubbly bath we were all wrestling around on mommy's bed, and we discovered that he has a penchant for faking "owies" for kisses. He did it over and over again.

A-ma is in town and Enzo is looking forward to seeing her tomorrow.

We started our day with another visit to see the construction site. Lots of action today. The big front loader filling up trucks with dirt, and then up the ramp.

We stopped into Borders across the street to look for a new book. I'm feeling like we own every good children's book in his age bracket. We looked for 30 minutes and found one book we liked.

After Borders, we headed across town to get dim sum. It took forever for our food to arrive, but Enzo hung in there, and then devoured his shumai and sticky rice in lotus leaf. He was close to falling asleep on the way home, but we made it back and Enzo got a second wind. We played with trains, rode around the block in his new tricycle, and watched some Planet Earth, Deep Ocean.

We headed out to check out some Play-Well playground equipment we're thinking about for Christmas. He thought we were at the best playground on Earth. Must have been 50 slides, forts, swings, and a whole row of little houses too. He was going bananas running in and out of the houses. Yelling, "ma ma", "da da".

When we got home, he was very ready for a nap, and slept for a little over an hour.

We played around the house a bit, and then went up to the Metcalfs to eat dinner and watch the USC game. Enzo, Luke, and Gabe had a great time playing together. Enzo of course liked all their train gear. All the kids did well at dinner, and then got a Rice Crispy treat for dessert. The highlight of Enzo's night was sitting slack-jawed in front of Charlie Brown's Great Pumpkin for about 10 minutes.

Back home, we did our usual ritual — bath, books, brush and bed. During his bath, Zoe ran the faucet to entertain Enzo. We kept asking if he was done, and he kept saying "more". We let him sit there for a while, then Zoe finally said, "OK Enzo, one more minute". Enzo paused, looked at her, and said "two".

down!

Enzo finally slept in until his normal 6:30AM so maybe we're back to pre-daylight savings time schedule. He and I ran the dogs to day care and then we met Zoe at Peets for coffee and construction site, "crane!". Unfortunately the crane operator was being picketed, so it wasn't working today. Enzo fell asleep for a couple minutes on the way back home, but perked up when he saw Alex, aka "Allie".

Milestones: I'm guessing Enzo is getting close to knowing how to say 100 words. He knows every common farm and zoo animal, and most of noises they make. He knows some other random critters too, like tonight he said "shrimp" when he saw a little shrimp sticker that we have in the tub. He also tries to say Ralph and Zoe, but he's not so great with "f" and "z". He sometimes tries to say his own name, but is shy about it. And he's getting better at saying Betty and Harriet, although he tries for Harry, and gets "heddy".

Nanny Note: I took him to MyGym. He was happy for about 20 minutes, then got pretty upset and didn't want to do anything. We left at 9:30. I'm thinking you should cancel the membership. When we got home, we read books, played with playdough, and Enzo made up a game. He put all his shoes on the floor, said "mess" and then he put them all on the ottoman and said "clean up!" This game lasted for 20 minutes. Then we watched Planet Earth. He really enjoys the ocean and all the fish. Enzo fell asleep fell asleep without a problem but woke up in a bad mood.

When Zoe got home from work, we went to see the new Whole Foods in Pasadena. It is pretty unbelievable, and apparently the biggest one on the West Coast. We sat and had dinner there. We wondering why he was sitting and eating so quietly, then we realized he was watching a cooking show on a tv above our table. Whatever works. He ate a lot, and has been for the past few days. Another growth spurt.

We stopped at a little old school toy store to get Enzo a wooden fish puzzle to help him learn his colors. He can say most of colors, if you say the word, but he doesn't really know them yet. His stock answer for "what color is this?" is "bloooo".

When we got home, he started chasing Harriet around the house yelling "heddy" over and over. Every time Harriet jumped up on the couch, he would yell "down!"

We took a long bath, then read books, and worked on the new puzzle. Right near bedtime, Enzo asked to go down stairs, and then said he was hungry. Zoe made him some mini PB&J cookie cutter animal sandwiches, which he quickly ate. Soon after, he was ready to crash.

drill

Enzo woke up at 5:15 again this morning. I thought he might go back to sleep but didn't on his own. I went in a snuggled with him on the beanbag, and we got about another hour of sleep.

We had a light breakfast of PB&J cookie cutter animals and fruit, and then took the dogs to play fetch at the Rose Bowl. Enzo and the dogs had fun as usual. Enzo walked the lines of the soccer field saying "line. line. line. line." He also had his own tennis ball thrower today, trying to throw the ball, and saying "thow" each time.

We stopped by the house to drop off the dogs and then went over to Heirloom to grab a coffee and a scone. Enzo was starting to fade at around 9:45, so I gave him his milk. Soon after, he drifted off to sleep. I parked down the street from school, and waited until about 11 to drive over.

Zoe was there to meet us, and she took Enzo to class today. He had another great day. Miss Adrienne is very proud of Enzo for doing so well lately. He really has come a long way just in the past two months, and has changed a lot. Everyone mentioned how much he's talking now, and he's so outgoing now too. Always saying "hi!" to everyone, and handing them toys. Today he said the name of one his little classmates, "Chloe", or something close to that. After school, Zoe dropped Enzo off at home with Alex.

Nanny Note: We watched Nemo for a bit and then went to Gymboree.

Enzo fell asleep in the car on way back home from Gymboree with Alex. When she woke him up to get out the car, he got very upset. He didn't really cheer up until Zoe came home with dinner. He was very hungry tonight. Sat in his chair, ate a big pile of fried rice and beans, and said "yummmm" with each bite.

It's dark so early now, there's not much do after dinner but goof around the house, play with trains, read books, and do puzzles. To add some excitement to the night, Zoe gave Enzo one of his Christmas presents, a toy Bosch cordless drill. Enzo was so happy. He was walking around the house, holding the drill over his head with both hands, yelling "drill" (more like "drew").

After bath we read more books. Poor Zoe, who got no rest on call last night, was putting herself to sleep with all the bedtime stories. He started getting a little fussy around 7:45PM, so we put him to sleep.

turtle

We started our day with a family run to the construction site to see the crane. Mommy spotted a better place to stand, and we had a great view of the whole site. Enzo munched down an entire bowl of fruit sitting in the backpack peering over the wall.

Nanny Note: We made tunnels with books and played with trucks, pretended to make, pour and drink tea. We sang songs, talked about all the different fish on his placemat then we watched Planet Earth, Ocean Deep. We walked down to feed the ducks. We read books about colors and played outside. We must have explored the neighborhood for about 45 minutes. We came home, read books and then I put him down for a nap at 12:30. After nap we played with the train set and watched Planet Earth again. He's so proud of the fact that he can say "turtle".

Zoe on call tonight, so daddy made dinner for Enzo and Wes too. Wes ate a huge mound of mac and cheese, while Enzo cried to get down from his chair. He's back into no dinner mode for some reason, but eating a lot during the day. Maybe just wasn't hungry. Wes and Enzo played in the train room for a bit after dinner.

After Wes left, daddy and Enzo shared a bowl of cereal and bananas while we read books on the couch. Enzo asked to use the potty and ran into the bathroom, but he'd already done his business by the time he got there. I gave him huge praise for asking though. We took a deep bubbly bath, followed by milk and some books. At exactly 8:PM, he put his head down on his blanket. I scooped him up, gave him a big kiss, told him that I loved him, and put him in his crib.

tricycle

Early start for Enzo today. Snuggle and milk with mommy this morning. Enzo got a nice soft boiled egg and some toast to dip. We spent the rest of the morning just playing around the house.

Alex took Enzo out to play and then met me at school. He slept in her car for about an hour, so was ready to go. We had a Jamba Juice and a few grapes, and then joined the class. He had a great class today. He was really relaxed and outgoing, saying "hi" to everyone and handing toys to people. We stepped out for a spot of milk about halfway through, and then rejoined the class. He was very excited about snack today. He politely asked the teacher for "moooore". We played outside with a little Radio Flyer wheelbarrow, and then went back inside for closing circle. He held Miss Adrienne's hand, which made her very happy.

Nanny Note: We went to Central Park to play. We played on the train, firetruck, and the swing. We sang songs while swinging. After school we played with the train set and watched Knuffle Bunny. We went to Kidspace at 3:PM.

After work, I assembled a new tricycle for Enzo. It was tough going until Zoe found the instructions online. He loved it. But was more interested in pushing it than riding in it. He was pushing the tricycle and running full speed down the sidewalk. Scary.

The Pfleegers stopped in for dinner, and then we took a nice hot bath. He was really sweet and funny tonight. We took some good video of him just goofing around, kissing the dogs, and doing some of his tricks. Enzo is a little off his schedule because of daylight savings time, but we tried to string him out until 8:PM. He didn't quite make it, so we're expecting early tomorrow.

November 05, 2007

foggy

Enzo and daddy and the girls went off to a foggy Rose Bowl and Enzo had fun walking along the lines on the soccer field. He insisted on sitting on the regular chair for breakfast so mommy had to perch herself precariously on the high chair.

Daddy spent part of the morning doing another school tour. He looked at a Montessori school that looked like another good option for Enzo.

Nanny Note: We played with puzzles, played outside and watched Knuffle Bunny. We went to Kidspace to play, then went to Jamba Juice. Enzo loved his Mango-a-go-go. He had a good nap and we walked all around So Pas. We had a very good day. Enzo is still adding new words every day. We went to the pet store and MyGym to get a schedule.

Enzo was in a great mood when Alex brought him home from his big day. He stood at the fence and threw rocks out onto the sidewalks, yelling "throw" and, inexplicably, "ah-choo!" He would not leave Zoe's side, and took her by the hand wherever he went. He got upset when she just walked down the driveway to get the mail. At dinner, he insisted again on sitting on a regular chair, even though the table was way too high for him. We are getting a booster for him tomorrow!

We had so much fun after his bath, he was in such a funny mood, rolling around and roughhousing on mommy's bed, stomping around in his shark house shoes, playing his harmonica, looking for Waldo.

He surprises us every day, saying things out of the blue that we have never taught him: tonight, he put his index fingers together and his thumbs together, looked at us and said "diamond!"

He also started saying "no" which he's heard a few times. He says it in this funny low raspy voice that cracks us up every time. I'm also pretty sure he said "shit" five or six times in a row after hearing me say it. We hate that he is growing up and getting older but look forward to the little person he is becoming.

company

Wow, what a busy Sunday. Enzo was up at about 5:15AM. We thought he'd go back to sleep but he kept crying. Daddy snuggled with him for a bit, then played trains, then read books, and then finally about an hour later, Enzo decided he'd catch a bit more sleep laying on my chest.

Mommy made breakfast, and the neighbors came by for a bit. After breakfast, we all went to Costco for an epic bulk shopping spree. We got all sorts of great stuff, including a huge pack of organic raisins and a big box of frozen mini pig-in-a-blanket. Enzo had those for lunch when we got home.

Soon after, Li and Neil came by with little Elijah. We couldn't believe how big he's gotten. He can crawl very well, and is starting to try to pull himself up on the furniture. Enzo, said "baby!" We watched some of the Patriots game, and ate brunch. Zoe made some great oatmeal cookies too.

It got to be 3:15PM and Enzo hadn't slept all day so I took him for a short drive. He fell asleep within about 2 minutes. After about 30 minutes, I brought him back to the house. He chilled with Nemo while mommy went to the store and made pizzas.

Eric and Wes came over for dinner and "pops". After dinner, he had a bubbly bath and then read books with Zoe. Well actually, read book. He asked Zoe to read his new Mo Willems book, I Am Invited To A Party about five times. I was downstairs cleaning up and I could hear Zoe reading, "party! party! party! party!" over and over.

We strung him out until 7:30PM (really 8:30PM for him), and after a good brush of the teeth, he went straight to sleep.

November 03, 2007

triplets

Mommy was on call last night, so Enzo and I snuggled and had our morning milk. We didn't really have a sit down breakfast, but had a bowl of cereal and some fruit. We headed over to Peets to grab a coffee and go see the crane. Unfortunately the guys weren't working, so we didn't stay long.

We got back just in time to meet Zoe coming back from work. We drove across to get a Jamba Juice. Enzo started saying "jahmb jooooz" which is hilarious. He loves the mango a go go. We met Katie and Luke at Garfield Park, had some lunch, climbed around on the equipment, and played in the dirt.

Zoe dropped us off at home for a nap while she ran some errands. I managed to put Enzo down in his crib and he slept for nearly 90 minutes, a rarity on the weekends.

After nap, we went to a 3 year birthday party for some triplets we know. It was a really mellow party, and Enzo had fun. He did wipe chocolate frosting from his cupcake on daddy's white shirt, which was probably the highlight of his day.

We headed home, had another snack and then just chilled at the house. We played inside and out, read some books, and watched some Nemo. He also got new tunnel for his train set today ("tunnoh"). After dinner, we took an early bath and played upstairs. Zoe read some books, and we played with his new alphabet puzzle. Enzo made daddy smell his feet, and then jumped up and down on his stomach, both which made Enzo laugh.

He was cooperative and very sweet as usual at bedtime.

November 02, 2007

meenow

Enzo was very upset when he woke up this morning for some reason. We had a hard time settling him down, but eventually he was OK after a little more milk and a minute of KB with mommy on the couch. Enzo sat for a long time eating and pushing his broccoli omelet around on the table while mommy and daddy got themselves ready.

Nanny Note: We went to feed the ducks then we came home and watched Knuffle Bunny. We went to visit Grandma Jean and then went shopping at the mall for Nathan's bday present. We played at Garfield Park because Enzo loves to run down the hills screaming. When we got home, we played outside and watched Knuffle Bunny again.

I took over from Alex around 4:PM today. Enzo was in a very silly mood. Screeching and laughing over and over. After running up to grab Nacho, we just hung around the house goofing around. I got some good video of him doing some of his classic tricks — pointing to various body parts, making animal noises, and saying "hi", "happy" and "tunnel". Later in the night I taught him that a fly says "buzz".

He wasn't too stoked about his lasagna, but he ate some cheesy veggies and a few bites of bread, and some fruit for dessert. He seemed exhausted by 6:PM and was rolling around with his blankets on the living room floor. He got upset when I brought him upstairs for bath, and the only thing that would calm him down was his milk. So we did things a little backward tonight.

After bath, we read a couple books and played with puzzles and Legos. Right before bed, he heard Mr. meowing downstairs, so he stood at the top of the stairs and said "meenow, meenow, meenow". He was fading at about 7:45, so I told it was time was bed. He walked to his crib, asked for his blanket, gave me a kiss, and went straight to sleep without a sound.

November 01, 2007

kissing bandit

We had a nice morning with Enzo before school. We had a snack and then some pancakes, before Alex came to take him out to play.

Daddy took Enzo to school today, and it went very well. We arrived just in time for opening circle. Enzo was very calm and sweet today, and played with everything in the room. He especially like the new handmade musical instruments from Columbia that one of the mom's brought. He did a lot of talking and saying "Hi!" to everyone ten times. He took a short milk break, and then was ready to play some more. He was very ready fro snack, and was first in line to wash his hands. After snack, Enzo walked around trying to kiss everyone. We played outside, and then happily joined in closing circle.

Nanny Note: We went to Union Bakery then the park to play. After school we had a snack and we played, then we went to the park again.

Enzo watched some of his new Knuffle Bunny animation before dinner. He wasn't so hot on the crockpot ribs, but he loved his buttery peas.

Despite not getting much sleep, Enzo was really fun and cute tonight after bath. He read books with mommy, and then played with a couple of his puzzles. He is really getting the hang his Tupperware Shape O Toy, which is classic. He was getting really silly, falling down and laughing when Zoe would hide behind the blanket and say "boo!". He also loved his Eric Carle rubber duck story. When he pressed the sqeaky button, he held his hands up to his mouth, "oh!".
