good morning

Enzo was in a good mood when he woke up this morning, and we had a nice long family snuggy in bed. He said, "good morning" to Harriet first thing. While mommy got breakfast ready, Enzo fed his fish and threw the ball for Betty. He made a mess of his peanut butter bagel while waiting for Alex to arrive.

Nanny Note: We went to the Zoo in the morning, and then back home for a nap. Poor guy sat in his crib crying "want daddy" for 20 minutes before finally asleep. After nap, we played around the house.

When mommy got home, the first thing he did was talk about what he saw at the zoo. "Otters flipping, hippos drinking, elephant eating" He threw the ball for Betty again while mommy made his dinner of sausage and beans - this kid looooves black beans. He ate a ton.

Mommy got a gift certificate to Barnes and Noble for her birthday so we took a family trip there after dinner. On the way, we stopped for some frozen yogurt, and Enzo ate his plain yogurt out of the sample cup, asking a few times for "a little more" We picked out some good books.

When we got home, we fed the fishies their dinner, and Enzo named one Momo and one Dory (very creative). He has yet to name the other two. He spied his leftover beans and avocado on the counter and asked for "more dinner" so we made him a new plate the he munched on while the bath was running. We took a fun bath, read some of new books, then off to bed without a peep.

March 30, 2008

fish tank

Enzo had his morning milk in our bed this morning, so we got an extra five minutes of sleep. We came down to play with his new train track setup that I cobbled together last night. After a bite to eat, we headed out to the Pfleeger bakery to meet before heading to the dog park.

It was boston terrier day today, and the dogs were nuts. There was a crazy little boston that looked just like Betty. Even Enzo thought so. Wes and Enzo spent some time throwing the ball for Betty, and searching for "dog poo poo." Nacho ran until she vomited, and then we left. On our way home, we stopped at the pet store to buy plants and some fish for Enzo's new ten gallon tank.

We got the fish and plants in the tank, and they all seemed to be OK, so we showed it to Enzo for the first time. He was pretty stoked about the tank and the fish, but then he saw a broom, and wanted to play with that. Throughout the day, he asked to "go see fishies". We tried to get him to name them, but he hasn't yet.

After a big pasta lunch, we put him down for a nap.

After nap, we drove to the valley to by a new dog bed for the living room. We stopped at the children's bookstore next door, and got a couple new books for the drive home. After a stop at the grocery store, we came home to throw the ball for Betty again, and play in the front yard. Enzo smacked the golf ball half way across the yard, and mommy was impressed. Zoe's been trying to teach him how to play hide-and-go-seek, but he doesn't quite get it yet. He thinks it's a counting game. She also taught him how to do a somersault.

After dinner, we walked down the block to see Jack. They did some running around in the neighbors yard, and Enzo took a scary fall. He tripped over the curb on to a driveway, but managed to get his hand out just in time. So his face bounced off the back of his hand instead of the asphalt. When Enzo laid down in the grass, Jack leaned over him. Enzo looked up at him, and said, "what's up?", which cracked us up.

After dinner, we vegged for a few minuted before bath, books, brush and bed.

March 29, 2008

there goes enzo

Enzo managed to sleep in a little this morning, then we had a family snuggy and some milk. We had breakfast at Pfleeger bakery - Enzo just picked the almonds off his croissant. We met Gabeluke at the park - we brought the dogs and we all had a great time running around and climbing and sharing snacks. After the park we went to a train store in Burbank that was having its annual sale. There were a million people there and Enzo really loved the old school tricked out trains that were running in the store. We bought a few things to enhance his existing set.

When we got home we threw the ball for the dogs for awhile. We had some lunch and Enzo took a nap while mommy met a friend for lunch. When mommy got home, we packed up and went to the park. Enzo had such fun
sitting in the sand with his toys until some kid came by, and with his parents, completely took over Enzo's toys. Enzo was so shy and timid, asking the other kid for his shovel back. Finally the kid's parents took him away, but by then Enzo had lost interest. We need to toughen him up, we think.

We had the best time rolling down the hill. Enzo would run up to the top of the hill, lie down, then roll down the hill, all the while yelling, "there goes Enzo! there goes Enzo!" We stopped for Mexican food on the way home and he ate an alarming amount of rice, beans, and avocado. We always go from worrying when he doesn't eat much for a few days to worrying that he's eating too much.

When we got home, it was still a little early for bath so we packed him up in his wagon and took a walk with the dogs. We visited with Jack, who was so cute and happy to see Enzo. We visited with Wes also, and the dogs ran around with Nacho for a bit. Wes was sweet and let Enzo borrow her stuffed Nemo. We got home just in time for bath, some books, then bed.

March 28, 2008

jack attack

After some morning milk and rat movie with mommy, Enzo and I ran the dogs to daycare then got hot dog bagel breakfast and a Jamba Juice. Back home, we sat on the front step and played in the front yard while we waited for Alex.

Nanny Note: We played at Eaton Canyon trail. Enzo threw rocks in the river and observed tadpoles swimming. We read books in the Nature Exchange Building and looked at the snakes and toads. When we got home we ate lunch and watched Swimmy

Enzo was sitting in his tent in just his diaper when mommy got home. He was very excited to see her, though, and made her sit in her tent with him. They read some books together and daddy kept him occupied while mommy got dinner stuff together. We packed up and left to pick up the dogs. Mommy took Enzo to look at all the fish. Enzo had fun dipping his fingers in the plant tank until daddy came over and got mad at mommy for letting him do that.

When we got home we played hide and go seek in the front yard, and threw the ball for the dogs. Our neighbors Fred, Dioni and their kids Jack and Trey came over for a barbeque. It was great to hang out with them.

Enzo was obviously very tired and hung in there until 7:30 when all of a sudden he decided he'd had enough and was now ready for bath and bed. A super quick bath, some books, then right to bed.

March 27, 2008

excavator

Enzo and I went to Peets for breakfast this morning. There was a huge excavator parked right next to the lot, and Enzo couldn't believe his eyes. He'd brought his little excavator which was almost an exact replica. He kept looking back and forth between the two, saying "same. same."

Nanny Note: We went to the park. We played in the sand and heard a man playing the violin. Enzo fell asleep in the car. He ate a very small lunch. After lunch we went to the library. Enzo was throwing books so we left and went to Kidspace to a bug show with Andre.

On her way home, Zoe called the house to say hi. Enzo spoke to her on the phone, saying "mommy come home right now". When Zoe got home, Enzo showed her the phone. He picked it up and said, "mommy come home", and then they played "enzo. it's for you".

We piled in the car and drove to the farmer's market. Enzo was nuts. He ran all over the place, sometimes stopping to stare at random people, and to give "mommydaddy" hugs. Zoe finally got him to sit in his wagon and eat an ear of corn.

Back home, we all zoned out watching rat movie for a few minutes before bath. After a few books, he asked for "one book" and then went to sleep.

March 26, 2008

it's bed time

Enzo was up early this morning, so we got some quality corner snuggling in while we waited for sunrise. We all went to So Pas for breakfast before Zoe left for work.

Nanny Note: We played outside till 11:00 then came home. We listened to classical music and had lunch. We watched Shallow Seas and read a few books before naptime. After nap, we went back to the park to play in the sand. At home we watched Ocean Deep and had snacks and played outside.

Zoe's on call tonight, so Enzo and I had bachelor night. Mac and cheese, hot dogs, and a bit of "rat movie". He ate a ton, then asked for a mini ice cream cone. I put him and his cone in the wagon and took him for a nice long walk before bath. When we got back to the house, he asked "mommy's home?"

He had a nice long bath. I finally just had to pull the plug in the tub. He sat there for a while in the wet but empty tub, saying "water gone. water again?" He was silly and cute, running around in his diaper laughing, "no daddy no" when I tried to put his pajamas on. After reading a few books, he sat up and said cheerfully, "it's bedtime!" Not going to argue with that.

March 25, 2008

miss mommy

Enzo woke up for some reason at 11 pm last night and was up for 45 minutes again. When we finally put him back into the crib (after some milk, some Nemo and a looooong time on the potty), we heard him start crying again. We knew he was fine, because we had just spent 45 minutes with him, so we let him cry it out. He asked for daddy, then mommy, then in a last desperate attempt, asked for Alex. He drifted off to sleep not too long after that.

Because Enzo has gotten into the unfortunate habit of asking to watch a video in the morning with his milk (not the worst thing in the world when he wakes up at 6 am in the morning, mostly because mommy and daddy can snuggy with him on the couch and get another 20 minutes of sleep), we tried a different tactic this morning and brought him into our bed for his milk. It was so nice, to cuddle with him and read to him first thing in the morning. Unfortunately, it was so nice that when Zoe finally looked at the clock, she realized she had 15 minutes to get herself together and get out of the house.

I took Enzo to Cindy's for a quick breakfast, and then back to the house to meet Alex.

Later in the morning, I watched Enzo for about an hour while Alex ran an errand. He was unusually mellow an focused. For nearly 30 minutes, he sat in my lap facing me while driving this little train up and down my arms and around the back of my neck. I just sat there staring at him while he whispered his little play-by-play narrative. The game was to try to make the train do the whole trip without losing the man and two anchovies that were driving.

Then we played in the living room with some trucks and little foam beads for dirt. He stopped playing with trucks and spent some time trying to stick them between his toes. When he finally had all four wedged in, he stood up and said "show mommy?" When I explained that mommy was at work, he sat down and said "miss mommy."

Enzo was in a sweet mood when mommy came home from work and showed off all his trucks. We had dinner then went off for a ride in his wagon to pass out some invitations for his birthday party next month. We stopped by to say hi to Jack then visited Wes and Nacho. Both Enzo and Wes had a great time watching Harriet and Betty run around after Nacho. When we got home we watched a short video on mommy's iphone then had a nice bath. After bath it was his usual milk and books. Tonight he revisited his old favorite, Zin Zin Zin Violin.

March 24, 2008

gravel

Enzo slept through the night, but woke up a little early. I took him to play fetch with the dogs at the Rose Bowl. He had a lot of fun until we had to change his diaper. We came back for a hot pancake breakfast that mommy had waiting.

Nanny Note: We played at Amy's all morning. We had lunch at home and watched Shallow Seas. After that we want to play at Kidspace. Your expiration has expired.

Zoe and I got home at the same time. Enzo was "running around half naked!", so we put some shorts on him and went to play in the front yard. I showed him how to properly hold his golf club, and he slapped his first swing across the yard. He smiled, held the club over his head, and said "yay!".

Before dinner, the three of us went for a walk down the block with his golf clubs. He ran from daddylion to daddylion hitting them with his club like they were golf balls on a tee. We bumped into Jack and stopped to play in his front yard with a cool truck.

Back home, I had Enzo run around the front yard trying to pick up as many leaves as he could while we waited for Zoe to get his bloop soup warmed up. The we chased Enzo around the front trying to get some dinner into him. After dinner, went to Petco to get some gravel for his new aquarium, and to see nemodory.

He had his usual bath and milk and stories, and was down to sleep at 7:30PM.

March 23, 2008

easter

Enzo had a pretty bad day. He woke up at 3 am, totally feverish and asked for milk. We had a family snuggy downstairs for about 45 minutes while he had his milk and tylenol, and we put him back into bed. He woke up again about 3 hours later. It was rough all day - he was alternating between lethargic and feverish to perking up but being touchy after the Tylenol kicks in. He was sweet, though, and tried hard to keep it together. It did not help that we were unsuccessful with his naps today - he slept a total of about 40 minutes, which did not help matters any.

We waited on him hand and foot all day. The easter bunny brought him a lot of eggs filled with goodies - you know he is not feeling well when neither m&ms nor Peeps elicited much of a reaction from him. We tried to color some eggs but he dumped the entire cup of orange egg coloring on his leg and was not that interested otherwise. He watched a lot of tv while snuggying with mommy or daddy on the couch. Mommy made him chicken soup twice. He ate a lot of edamame.

He said some funny things: we had asked him not to poop in his diaper and to let us know when he needed to go. Later he looked at us and said, "no poop in diaper" and pointed to the back yard and said "lots of poo poo out there" We played in the front yard, and took a bunch of photos. Daddy taught him some cool lacrosse moves with his dog ball thrower.

He watched "Ratatouille" about 3 times.

Overall he seems to be getting a little better - we're not quite sure what's going on because aside from his fever and a little runny nose, he's not really "sick" - we are suspecting that he is getting his last set of molars in (we suspect that he is getting all four at once again) We are looking forward to getting our good natured, no fever enzer back very soon.

March 22, 2008

over doing it

After breakfast at Heirloom, we headed down to Manhattan Beach. We got there about 10:AM and the parking lot was almost full already. It was such a beautiful day. Not a cloud in the sky, but not too hot, and a breeze off the ocean. We dragged Enzo in the overstuffed wagon across the sand, and set up our stuff.

Enzo and I immediately dug a big hole to play in with his new shovel and claw diggers. After some time in the hole, we went back up to see mommy and to refuel. Enzo grabbed his shovel and we went to the waters edge, and played in the surf. Enzo was fearless today, wanting to drag me closer and closer to the waves breaking on the beach. He loves to sink down into the sand as the waves go washing over his feet back out to sea. Zoe came down to play in the cold water too. After nearly pulling his little arm out of the socket many times trying to avoid incoming breakers. We went back to rest in our chairs.

Maya and family came as we were eating some lunch. Enzo took me a walk down the beach, and then it was back to the hole, and then back into the surf. Before we realized it, it was already 2:PM. Enzo was exhausted after four hours of playing in the sun, sand, and surf. He fell asleep instantly after getting in the car. Unfortunately he only slept about 30 minutes, waking up right before we got home.

He was sooo tired but wouldn't go back to sleep in his crib. So we came downstairs to watch some Planet Earth, and then we played in the front yard again. After a snack, we went for a long walk. We were hoping he'd fall asleep in the stroller, but he never did.

When we got home, Enzo was starting to seem really out of it. He wouldn't eat, and by 6:PM he was very upset and could barley keep his eyes open. He also seemed to be running a fever. We gave him some Tylenol and put him to sleep at about 6:45, but he only slept for an hour.

When he woke up, he was upset and seemed to be ever warmer. Finally after about a hour of crying, we gave him a bath, and got him settled down again with a few stories. He wanted to back to sleep around 9:PM, but then only slept for another hour. He cried softly in his crib for about 15 minutes before falling back asleep on his own.

He's been waking up every 30 minutes crying since then. Going to be a long night.

March 21, 2008

mowed

Enzo woke up bright and early this morning. We had a nice family snuggy on the couch while he had his milk. He was stoked when Mr jumped up on the couch and he started talking to us about Mr ("fat", "gray" "nice"). We were asking him about some other stuff when he started talking about daddy. He said, "daddy. friend. big hug" and gave him a big hug. It really was very sweet. He later sat in his tent and gave mommy a kiss through one of the little portholes and said "love you", unprompted.

When we got home tonight he was having an afternoon pop in the front yard that was mowed for the first time today. We sat in the yard for a long time, throwing a ball around and watching him do somersaults. We had dinner in the back yard and Enzo slid down the slide over and over. Unfortunately every time he slid down the slide it built up quite a bit of static electricity and he would shock himself every time. He would get up and say, "oh. god. Enzo" We are trying not to laugh every time he says this. He threw the ball for Betty for a long time after dinner. We had a nice bath, a lot of books then bed right on time. Beach tomorrow.

March 20, 2008

market

Enzo woke up in the middle of the night - just as we were going to bed he started crying and saying "want daddy" over and over again. We gave in after about 10 minutes and went in and poor baby - he was standing in his crib crying. He said he was hungry - we gave him some milk and a snack and after about 15 minutes we asked him if was ready to go to bed and he said yes, so we put him back in his crib. We also gave him a pep talk about eating more of his dinner at dinnertime.

Mommy and Enzo snuggled on the couch before heading to work. Then Enzo and I went across town to Peets to grab a hot dog bagel and a coffee. We walked across the street to see the cranes, and then popped in Borders for a minute. He walked around pointing at all the books he owns, saying “at home. at home. at home.” to each one he recognized.

On our way to school we stopped for a Jamba Juice. After a few slurps, he fell asleep for about 20 minutes in the backseat. I woke him up, and then went to class. He had a pretty good day today. Chloe again was chasing him around to get some hugs. It kind of freaked Enzo out, but he managed to wriggle free each time. He couldn’t sit still for snack. I asked him what all his friends were doing, and he said “sitting table snack”, and then he ran off to play. We had to leave after snack so I could make it a meeting.

Nanny Note: We read books and played outside. I took him to Kidspace but he fell asleep on the way so I just came back home. When he woke up he watched a bit of Nemo

When mommy got home, Enzo was in a great mood wheeling his wheelbarrow around outside. When daddy got home we scooped him up and went to the Thursday night farmer's market for the first time in months. We hung out with his old girlfriend Eliza and her parents and he even saw his other old girlfriend Sophia. He also ran around and tried to imitate the older boys climbing on the rocks.

When we got home we threw the ball for the dogs (“good throw!” he would say to himself each time) for awhile then had a long bath then books before bed.

March 19, 2008

tarantula

We went to Pfleeger bakery this morning for a coffee and a snack. Enzo gave mommy a few big kisses before she left for work, and we stayed for a bit longer finishing up our croissant and cinnamon roll.

Nanny Note: We watched Shallow Seas and played with trains set. We played outside with the water table then watched Nemo. After nap we went to play at the park. Today he got to see the World Famous Famous Spider Show with Andre. Enzo liked the tarantula.

After work, mommy whipped up dinner while Enzo and I chatted with Gramma Dee and Grampa Buzz. He told them about his day, showed them a few books he's been reading lately, and was just generally sweet and goofy. We ate outside, and managed to get a little food in Enzo as he was begging to get down from his chair to play to Betty. So many noodles were hitting the ground for Betty to eat, she was quite happy to have him continue his meal.

He finally got down to climb, slide, swing, hang from the monkey bars, and ride around on daddy's shoulders. We came back inside to watch some Totoro, and eat some ice cream before bath. Enzo played with his legos tonight, making a "tall tall crane".

March 18, 2008

exoskeleton

Enzo slept in and woke up in a great mood, which was nice because Zoe was on call last night. We went to Cindy's for breakfast, and then I handed him over to Alex when we got home. He showed Alex his diver man mask, and she adjusted it to fit his head. As I was going upstairs, I heard Alex teaching him how to say "exoskeleton". Part of some lesson she was learning for her job at Kidspace.

I took Enzo back from Alex around 10:30AM, and we headed up to school. He fell asleep on the way, but I woke him when we arrived. He was a little bit touchy today — getting upset and asking for milk and "back home" whenever he bumped his head or had a tense moment with a friend over some toy. I took him outside a couple times to calm him down, but he always decided to go back inside, and we made it through class. He had fun running around outside after snack, although he banged his head on the water pump spout twice in the span of about five minutes.

Nanny Note: We watched the demo guys throw trash into the big bin, and we talked about giant African millipedes. After school we played with toys, and went to Kidspace.

Turns out that his 15 minute nap on the way to school was the only sleep he'd get today, but he was fun this afternoon despite that. When Alex dropped him back to the house, we played in his tent, and then Zoe attempted to feed him some dinner. He was more interested in running around with his shovels in the back yard.

After a walk down the block pushing his wheelbarrow, we came back to chill with some Hat and Shallow Seas before bath. He wanted to read the Giving Tree again before bed.

March 17, 2008

giving tree

Enzo and I took the dogs to the Rose Bowl while Zoe stayed home to make Enzo a big pancake breakfast and a nice box lunch. He had fun running around in the field and trying to throw the ball for the dogs. As per usual after about 20 minutes, he just dropped his ball and thrower at my feet, said "back home", and started walking to the car. He was happy that mommy was home when we got back, and then gave her hug and kiss when she left for work.

Nanny Note: We walked up to the park in the wagon. We played for a while then on the way back home we collected magnolia pods and flowers for Fuzzy. We watched Ocean Deep and read books. After nap we went shopping for flowers so Enzo can grow a butterfly garden. We bought some sage and yarrow which bloom soon. We played outside and painted and colored.

Enzo ate a big mac-n-cheese dinner tonight, topped off with a few crackers and a pop. We took the wagon around the block, stopping to see Eric's new fence. We ended up staying for a while. Wes and Enzo played very well tonight, although not really together. Enzo sat at the table nibbling on chips and cheese while Wes ate her dinner. Wes looooves her cupie mayonnaise.

When we got home, Enzo chilled with some more Ocean Deep and then we took a bath. I sat quietly while he whispered to himself, "hammerhead, yes. white tip, yes. whale shark, yes. boat tip over in ocean, yes." and so on.

He asked for the "giving tree" first and then "worm die-ree", and then to bed at 8.

March 16, 2008

bouncer

It was too much to hope for back to back perfect days with Enzo. He woke up early and cranky. And then had a pretty rough morning. After one failed nap at 11, I took him to the park to tire him out. He had a great time "digging and dumping". Then finally he went down for a good nap later in the day.

After his nap, we went for a long walk around the neighborhood. As we walked he was saying to himself "no way, hos-ee" for some reason. Then we went to Gabeluke's house for a great birthday dinner party for Zoe and Sylvia. Scott had the bouncy castle set up and the kids were so stoked. Enzo was going berserk. Screeching and flopping all over the place with Gabeluke. He came inside to wolf down an entire hot dog. Then Enzo helped Zoe blow out some birthday candles.

We got back home for a late bath and a Little Bear book before bed.

March 15, 2008

bat ray

After lounging around the house this morning, we packed up and headed to the Long Beach Aquarium.

We arrived soon after opening at 9:AM. Enzo made a few stops to see some fish here and there, but he was on a mission to get to the shark and ray touch tank. We stood hanging over the edge touching shark after shark and ray after ray. We manhandled some anemones and starfish, and then walked through the second floor exhibits. We stopped to say hi to the diver man in the big tank. And he got a stuffed penguin on the way out, "love it".

We drove to Culver City to eat lunch, and then back to Pasadena. We timed it perfectly so Enzo fell asleep as we pulled in the driveway.

We finally went in to wake Enzo up after his two hour nap, because we didn't want him to sleep for too long, too late. He woke up in a really good mood, and we had a snack and went for a walk with the dogs in his wagon. After we got home, we went out for barbeque ribs. Enzo definitely loves gnawing at sticky baby back ribs. He also loved his sweet potato fries, apple sauce, mac n' cheese, and pulled pork. The kid ate a ton. After dinner we walked over to get some ice cream, and he turned his nose at his vanilla cone with sprinkles, and instead took over daddy's mint chip with chocolate sprinkles. The apple does not fall far from the tree.

It was getting late so we hit the bath soon after we got home. He played with his boat and diver man in the tub. After bath, he sat on the potty and did his business while having an imaginary tea party with mommy. Some books and milk, and he was off to bed without a peep. We listened in on him for a bit after we put him in his crib while he chatted to himself about his day.

It really was a nearly perfect day with Enzo today. He never even remotely got upset about anything and was really happy and cheerful, said a hundred funny things and ate a ton of food today.

March 14, 2008

new couch

Zoe had the day off, but had to round on some patients early this morning, so Enzo and took the dogs to day care, and got a Jamba Juice and coffee. Then we went to the park to dig and dump.

We got home just as our new couch was being delivered. Enzo loved watching the delivery men, and said "new couch" over and over. We snuggied for awhile on our new couch, then Enzo took a monster 2 hour nap. After he woke up, we put him in his wagon and walked to our neighborhood park. He climbed and ran around for a good long time. He is doing a new thing where he hangs and swings from a bar on the play structure and dangles his legs like a monkey from the top. It was making us very nervous.

We walked home and hung out for awhile before we packed up and hit the road for dinner and to pick up the dogs. Enzo really enjoyed his dinner of guacamole and beans and rice. He had a mini burrito that he dipped in his guacamole over and over again, but essentially just licked off the guacamole. We stopped at the store and daddy gave Enzo the watermelon to hold in the backseat - he kept laying his leg over it and saying "feet on it". When we got home he had some of the anemic watermelon and almost fell asleep on the couch. He had a very short bath, some books, and then off to bed.

March 13, 2008

fuzzy

Enzo and I went to So Pas for breakfast, and then back home to meet Alex.

When they got back from the park, Enzo and I headed up to school. He had a good day and was pretty cute today. He told Miss Adrienne the Elf story, which she loved. He said some funny things. He poured Miss Adrienne some imaginary tea, and when she asked what flavor the tea was, he said "jamba juice mango". When he ran across the room, he would stop and say, "whoa. so fast". And at one point he walked up to Miss Adrienne and said "shallow seas. ocean deep. hammerhead." They all thought he was reciting poetry. Chloe couldn't stop hugging him today which made him very uncomfortable. Enzo did all the hand movements with the snack blessing song, which just about made me burst into tears.

Zoe was home when we got back from school, and Enzo was happy to see her. She gave him a big hug, and said "i love you...", and he said "toooo much" (instead of "so much"), which cracked us up. We had lunch and went for a walk down the street. Alex came back at around 4:PM to watch Enzo. She brought him a caterpillar that he promptly named "fuzzy". We have it in this little bug cage, and hopefully it will live and turn into a butterfly. If it doesn't we'll get another one and hope that one lives and turns into and butterfly.

Zoe and I went out for her birthday dinner across town. Our first date in a while. Enzo was sound asleep when we got home. Sounds like he had a fun night at the farmers market.

March 12, 2008

big hug

Zoe and Enzo had their usual morning snuggle while watching some diver man this am. Enzo slept in. Hoping that's the start of a new trend. When Zoe told Enzo she was leaving for work, he sat up and gave her the loooongest hug he's ever given. Really squeezed her tight. So sweet. When Zoe said "i love you", Enzo said "so much!" which is a line from his book, My Mum Goes to Work.

Nanny Note: We went to Kidspace and played in all the areas. We played at the park for a while too. When we got home, we had lunch and watched Ocean Deep and read a few books. We took a walk after nap and had a nice talk with one of the neighbors.

Zoe is on call tonight, so when I took Enzo from Alex around 5, we walked up to eat dinner with Eric and Wes. They both did well with dinner, Wes more so. And they spend time playing in Wes' room and at the art table in the living room. There were a few tugging matches over toys here and there, but they did pretty well tonight. The biggest struggle was the new DWR catalog with a bird on the cover. Luckily Eric had two.

When we got home, Enzo watched some Totoro while I got his bath together. He sat quietly whispering to himself and to the diver man in the tub. We stood on the step for a pee before getting dressed for bed. It was getting late so we only read a few books. We read him The Giving Tree last night for the first time, and he really seems to like it and get it. Such a sweet story. Hard to read without getting a lump in my throat.

I told him how much I loved him, and put him down in his crib.

March 11, 2008

run around naked

Enzo woke up in a bit of a cranky mood but cheered up once he go this milk. When daddy turned on the light in the living room, he barked at him to turn it off. Mommy made some breakfast for him and we all sat in the nook and encouraged him to eat. He enjoyed dipping his sausage into his syrup.

When I took off Enzo's shirt to put on a clean one before leaving for school, he squealed "naked!" and then yelled "run around naked!" and ran off into the kitchen.

He fell asleep on the way up to school for a few minutes, but I woke him up when we arrived. He wasn't happy about that, but recovered quickly. About halfway through class, Chloe gave him a big hug and inadvertently tackled him, and that made him upset. He came over crying, asking for "milk? dump truck?" He settled down and we went back inside to play. After snack, he sat in knee-deep mud hole in the far corner of the yard. I tried to bring him in for closing circle but he wanted to stay in the mud. I got a bucket of water to clean him up, and then we left.

Nanny Note: We played at the park and watched Planet Earth. I don't think Enzo slept. I think he was too busy sticking his hand in his diaper and pulling out the contents. I gave him a nice soapy bath and discussed with him that we do not stick our hands in our diapers.

When he came home with Alex he was hot, sweaty and tired and obviously had just woken up from a short car nap. He was cranky again and seemed really small. His little face was covered in chocolate. At least we hope it was chocolate. Zoe made barbecue pulled pork, and we didn't think Enzo would like it so we made him a little plate of Enzo food including some mac and cheese and corn; he pushed his food away and demanded daddy's sandwich. After his first bite he said, "mmm, good" so mommy made him a mini sandwich. He ate the porky insides and left the bun behind.

After dinner, we took a walk in the wagon and visited Wes and her daddy. He ran around the back yard and threw the ball for Betty for a long time. He was exhausted and took a short bath before some books then bed.

blue tang

Enzo woke up wanting to watch the scuba divers filming piranhas. Zoe asked him if he wanted to be a diver man like his daddy (was) and he said yes. Zoe packed Enzo a big lunch before leaving early for the OR.

Enzo and I went to Cindy's for breakfast. He was talking to the waitress a lot this morning — pointing out that his car was red, and that his little Dory fish was a "blue tang". She was impressed that he knew it was blue. I didn't bother trying to explain that he also knows the correct Family. When we got home, Enzo threw the ball for the dogs. When the sprinklers suddenly came on, we all ran inside. As we were waiting for Alex to come, I asked Enzo who was coming to play with him today. He thought for a second, and said "grampa buzz?"

Nanny Note: We went to the Zoo. Enzo slept for an hour in the car on the way back. At the house we ate lunch and watched Shallow Seas. Then we played with stamps, read a few books, played in the kitchen, and went for a short walk.

During dinner, we talked with Enzo about his big day at the Zoo. He listed all the animals he saw, and told us about his lunch from his new lunch box. We went for a walk around the neighborhood with the dogs. Enzo spent most of his time looking for "daddylions" and blowing seeds all over the place. He insisted on walking the entire way, even though he was so tired as we approached the house that he kept sitting down to rest.

In the tub, Enzo told the elf story a few times, and we talked about the diver man again (and sang the song). Zoe read him a few bedtime stories, then I read him "one book" and then we put him to sleep.

sandy

Great Sunday with Enzo. We started the morning playing fetch in the back yard with the dogs, and then headed out to breakfast in So Pas. Then it was off to Manhattan Beach.

Such a beautiful day down there today. The surf was perfect. Lots of "surfer mans" around. We piled up the wagon, with Enzo in it, and found a nice spot to set up his new chair. I dug a big hole, in which he sat for a long time. Then he discovered how much fun it was to climb out, jump in, climb out, jump in, climb out.

We took a break for snacks, and then Maya showed up with her parents. We brought Enzo and Maya down to the edge of the water, and they loved it. Enzo kept running straight toward the waves breaking on the beach. No fear of water at all. After four hours of the beach, we headed home.

Enzo fell asleep after about 30 seconds once we got to the car, and stayed asleep for about 90 minutes. After a stop a Whole Foods for lunch, we went home. Enzo was anxious to run into the backyard and spray the dogs with the hose because mommy mentioned it in the car. He sprayed the dogs, mommy, daddy, the house, and even through the door into the kitchen.

We went for a short walk down the block to disperse more dandelion seeds on to our neighbors yard, and then just bombed around the house for the rest of the evening - reading, eating, painting, and watching some William Steig shorts.

elijah

Enzo and I went Peets to get coffee and a hot dog bagel. It was tough to eat because Enzo was running all over the place. I finally stuck him back in his car seat, and he gnawed on his bagel on the way over to the park.

We were the first ones at the park. Enzo sat and dug a hole with his shovel and played with him dump truck for a long time before deciding to climb around a bit. There were a bunch of kids and parents there by the time we left.

Zoe got home after her long night and hung out with Enzer while I went to the Waldorf parent teacher meeting this morning. They watched a little Totoro and chatted and shared a scone.

When I got home we all jumped in the car and drove out to Woodland Hills for Elijah's first birthday party. We thought Enzo would fall asleep in the car but he was wide awake the whole time. We were very nervous, but Enzo did great at the party. He ran around like crazy, played with all the toys and games, jumped in the bouncy castle, and eyeballed the other kids. He said, "happy birthday Elijah" and met a cute girl named Gigi. He ate pizza and cake and was happy the whole time we were there. It really was a great party.

He got a short nap in on the ride home; unfortunately mommy fell asleep in the back seat with him and jerked while her hand was on his forehead (to keep his head from lurching forward every time we stopped the car in traffic) and this woke him up after only a 25 minute nap. We got home just in time and calmed him down, but he did not get any more sleep.

I took him to the park for awhile so that Zoe could get a little nap in - she did not sleep at all last night. When Zoe woke up, we went out for Mexican food and Enzo had a great dinner of beans, avocados rice, and a little cheese quesadilla. We ran some errands after dinner, and jumped straight into the bath when we got home. He was cute in the bath and was able to say his whole name correctly for the first time "De-Fe-leeeece!" A few books and a little milk and he was off to bed with no protest at all.

hi mom

Enzo and mommy snuggled on the couch this morning while I got the dogs ready for day care. Enzo and I took them out there early today. After dropping them, we stopped to watch the girl feed the turtle some "salad" and feed the lizards some little crickets. "Whoa" said Enzo. We got a strawberry Jamab Juice and a coffee, and headed back to the house to meet Alex.

Nanny Note: We watched Planet Earth and then went to Descanso Gardens. We looked at all the ponds, fish, turtles and flowers. We walked up to the desert and took a hike on the trail, we even saw a hummingbird. At home we had a small lunch, watched Planet Earth, then went to Kidspace.

When I got back from downtown, Enzo and I drove out to pick up the dogs. We had to stop and see the amphibians and reptiles again, and the fish too. Enzo thoughtfully grabbed two dog bones out of the dish to feed the puppies. "betty. harriet. treat." Betty ate both, but it's the thought that counts.

We dropped the "crazy mutts" at home and then drove to see Zoe on call at the hospital. He was playing with an old cell phone on the drive out there. Holding it up to his ear, saying "hi, mom. yes. call back."

Enzo wasn't much interested in eating his Thai food, but he was happy to see mommy. He did his usual deer in the headlights routine (aka Michigan J Frog) when faced with a room full of cooing nurses. They all must think he's mute. Literally not a word or a smile out of him.

After giving mommy a hug and kiss, we drove home. Enzo kept asking for a "prize" (short for surprise) from the armrest compartment, where he knows I keep some emergency toys. He wasn't happy when I ran out of armrest surprises. I need to restock.

We took a short bath. Enzo made me sing the "diver man song", which is sort of an improved version of the the Spiderpig theme song which is the old Spiderman song. We read a few books. I know Enzo was tired because he asked for "one book" at 7:45 and happily let me brush his teeth before I put him in the crib.

polychrome

We had a fun morning at the house before Zoe went to work. I gave Alex the morning off as a trade for babysitting time on Friday night, so Enzo and I went across town to get a hot dog bagel see the construction site. After that, we drove downtown to the studio to say to everyone. He was cute on the drive down, reading from his book "hey hey big guys. wake up!" and "shimmy shimmy. toes". Enzo was happy and very cute exploring the space.

He fell asleep on the way back up the 110 on our way to school. I woke him up after about 30 minutes and we went to class. He had fun today but got a little anxious about going "back home" just before snack time. I did my best to deflect him. Once he was outside in the dirt pile, he was happy. He kept saying "holy cow!" with every scoop of dirt. A couple of the moms thought that was funny. He said "sorry" to Miss Adrienne for getting upset during closing circle, and gave her a hug goodbye.

Enzo was in a crazy mood when he got home from Kidspace this afternoon. He was soaking wet. We can only imagine what he put Alex through this afternoon. Daddy sat with him in the kitchen nook and they mixed an egg while keeping mommy company. She was slaving over a hot stove. Enzo ran around like a crazed animal in his diaper after dinner, and we had fun playing with trains afterwards.

In his bath he whispered at length to himself a long involved story about his diver man and his turtle. His orca had a shark fin in its mouth so we asked if the orca was kissing the shark, and he said, "no, biting." Nice.

fight

Enzo had his usual morning of not very much breakfast, but was in a cheery mood. We had a fun family morning, running around and had breakfast at Cindy's.

Nanny Note: We played at Kidspace all morning. We played in all the areas and visited all of Enzo's fans (Alex works part time at Kidspace; she says when she brings him there he gets the royal treatment and is treated "like a rock star") After nap we watched some Planet Earth. Wesley came over for about an hour then we played with stamps and took a walk.

Mommy had the afternoon off and she and daddy ran some errands together. As we got closer to the house, we saw Enzo walking down the street with Alex. We pulled over and mommy got out to walk home with them. The first thing Enzo said to her was, "upset". When she asked him about it, he said, "Wes" "fight" "cry". Alex said that Wes had come over for an impromptu playdate and that it did not go over very well. Its too bad that the love is gone between the two of them. Maybe they will find love again someday.

He is getting much better about peeing standing up; unfortunately, he often pees standing up as soon as his diaper is off no matter where we are including the living room. We will need to refinish our floors soon.

We bought Enzo a cheapie little pup tent at Ikea that we put up in the livingroom - Enzo loved that thing and filled it with his stuffed animals, and spent a long time lying around in there talking to his animals. He had fun kissing mommy through the little portholes in the tent. We ate a nice dinner of lamb chops, and he halfheartedly gnawed on some bones "meat pop" but was not as enthusiastic about lamb as he is about his beloved riblets.

We watched some of "The Hat" after dinner - Enzo loves the part where the woman says "Never mind the hat, caro mio" and said "caro mio" over and over. We taught him a little song of our phone number during his bath. Off to bed without a peep as usual.

grill

After morning milk, Enzo went in the backyard to play in the sprinklers. We came back inside for breakfast, and then Enzo sat at his table drawing with a new set of markers.

Alex watched Enzo for a couple hours before I took him up to school. He was tired and fell asleep on the way over there. He woke up a few minutes later, and we walked up to the classroom. He had to stop for "gulping" from the water fountain before going through the gate.

We had an OK day at school. It was the first time all year that all eight kids were there on the same day, so it was a little chaotic. I had to deflect a few requests to go "back home", but I felt like Enzo really had fun. One little girl in the class kept trying to hug Enzo and hold his hand, and he was not having any of that. As usual a lot of his attention was focused on Miss Adrienne. He interacts with her more than any of the other kids do. After snack, he dug in the dirt and pushed a wagon around. Then sat for a long time on the bug bench with Miss Adrienne.

Nanny Note: We walked around the neighborhood and colored, used stamps and played with playdough. After school we watched Here Comes the Cat and read some books and then I put him down for a nap.

Zoe and I were both home when Enzo came back with Alex in the afternoon, we were making dinner. Enzo and I grilled and played with the dogs before sitting for a brief dinner. Enzo spotted the computer and asked to "ichat" with Gramma Dee and Grampa Buzz. Enzo said hi and told them about his day.

We watched some frogs and birds, and then went upstairs for bath and an early bedtime.

March 03, 2008

here comes cat

As mommy was leaving for work this morning, Enzo came up to her with his train engine and asked mommy to "give hug" to the train, which she did. The he asked her to "give kiss", which she also did. Then he asked her to "give nice" and mommy was a little confused. Enzo demonstrated by gently stroking the back of the train.

Enzo and I took the dogs to the Rose Bowl. The dogs were very happy. Enzo practiced throwing, "arm way back. i throw." When he was bored with that, he started running around yelling "here comes cat!" He grabbed my hand so we could run together. We started running all around yelling, "here comes cat", "here comes dog", "here comes hippo", "here comes elephant". After running from a long list animals, Enzo stopped, looked up at me and said "here comes mango!", and went running off laughing and screaming.

Nanny Note: We went to the Zoo until 1:PM. When we got home, we watch Totoro for a little for a little while then read stories. Enzo took a short nap and then we played and read more books and we listened to music.

After work today, I walked with Enzo up to say hi to Wes while Zoe made dinner. Eric was in the middle of a struggle with Wes over a bowl of fish crackers before dinner, so was happy to see us. They played well together today. On the way home, I asked Enzo to "tell me about daddy", hoping to hear him say "sweet" again, but instead, he said "fat". So much for that game.

Enzo wasn't much interested in dinner, but apparently ate a lot over the course of the afternoon. After dinner we watched the frogs and birds on Planet Earth. We played with trains, and then took a loooong bath. He seemed very tired after his fun day with Alex.

March 02, 2008

fat belly

Enzo woke up chipper this morning, wondering where grampa Buzz and grandma Dee were. They were stuck for hours in a blizzard in Denver, that's where they were. While mommy and Enzo were having their usual morning snuggle, Mr. jumped up on the couch and Enzo started talking about him, completely unprompted: "happy", "hungry", "cute eyes", and "fat belly". It made us laugh.

We stopped at the Pfleeger bakery where we ran into them again and said hi, then were off to the dog park. There was supposed to be a Boston terrier meetup, but Betty and Harriet were the only Bostons there, along with a half dozen Frenchies. Daddy and Enzo played in the park while mommy minded the dogs.

After we dropped the dogs off at home, we went to Target for some sippy cups and beach chairs (no more bottles by the time he's 2! enough is enough!), and even found a mini Enzo - sized beach chair. We made it home in time to transfer Enzo to his bed where he proceeded to take another almost 2 hour nap.

When he woke up, we played out in the yard, read some books, and ran more errands. When we got home we rearranged his play room and set up some trains. Enzo had a bit of a meltdown because he threw part of his puzzle on the floor and we tried to make him pick them up. 20 minute meltdown later, we were the ones to give up because he was so miserable, and later after he had calmed down, he said "mommy mad, Enzo" which made mommy feel horrible. She explained that throwing his toys was not a nice thing to do and asked him to pick up his toys when she asked him to. He acted like he understood what the hell she was talking about. We'll see. Later, he walked up to us and asked both of us for a hug and kiss.

We took an early bath, per his request, and daddy taught him how to throw overhand and not "like a girl" in the tub. After a particularly good throw (where the frog would land outside the tub or if he knocked the shampoo bottle over), he would say, "what an arm" and clap, obviously pleased with himself. After we read him his "one book", he pointed to his crib and said "bed". Which is where he went.

March 01, 2008

sweet

Enzo woke up in a bit of a sour mood and flipped out after we tried to put his ninja t-shirt on him. Needless to say, we took it off. Dee & Buzz came over and we went for a extended family breakfast at Cindy's. It was very crowded, and Enzo did not eat much but at least we got to show Dee & Buzz what Cindy's was all about.

We stopped for another coffee and ran into the Pfleeger pfamily at the bakery in our neighborhood. We had a chat with Shellie, then we were off. We had big plans for the beach but the weather was not cooperating. We headed out anyway and spent a cold and blustery hour on the beach. Enzo had a great time even though he was freezing. Buzz dug a great big hole for him and Enzo was delighted to fall in. Enzo wore his new shark sweatshirt and was very cute with the hood on.

Enzo took a great big nap in the car, long enough for mommy and Dee & Buzz to do some grocery shopping. Enzo woke up in a good mood, and when we got home we took a walk, bummed around the house, watched mommy make dinner, watched some Shallow Seas and read some books. Enzo was describing Harry and Betty to Dee and when she asked him to tell her about daddy, he thought for a second and answered, "sweet" and reached out and touched his face. Very sweet indeed.

Enzo would not eat dinner at the table and got quite upset when we kept him at the table. Afterwards he managed to eat two helpings of his favorite Chez Pannise bolognese sauce. After dinner we went for some Pinkberry, then stopped in a bookstore where Dee & Buzz got Enzo a bunch of new books, to add to the many books they had brought him earlier. He was eager to show "gramma Dee" a cool Maisy popup book. We had fun in a bubbly bath, read some books then off to bed without a peep. He had a great visit with Grandma Dee and Grampa Buzz, and will ask for them tomorrow, we're sure.
