I went and fetched a big breakfast tray from the hotel buffet, and we ate in the room before heading out to see Monterey. Our first stop was this
amazing park right down the street from the hotel. Enzo went kind of bananas, and ran around for at least an hour, climbing on every thing, and running up this steep hill covered in goose shit on the edge of the park. Finally, his terrible nights sleep caught up with him, so we left the park.
Enzo slept as we drove around looking for a place to get a decent cup of coffee and something more to eat. We stopped at this little beach next to the Coast Guard pier right on the edge of Cannery Row to wait for him to wake up. When he did, we walked along the sandy beach, picking up shells and bits of squishy algae. We also watched a group of "diver mans" put on their gear and swim out to their dive spot.
We walked out onto the pier to see the sea lions warming on the rocks. They were very close, and when I leaned out to take a closer photo, one snapped his head around and barked at me. I jumped right out of my shoes. Enzo and mommy thought that was funny. And some lady laughed at me too.
We bombed around a bit, waiting for Kala to drive down from SF to meet us. She brought sweet little Sophie with her.
We all went into the aquarium around noon. Needless to say, Enzo loved it. It was pretty crowded, so we needed to keep him close. But he just wanted to run from one tank to the next. I tried to let him ride on my shoulders for a while so he could see over the people, but he was yanking on my hair, and sticking his fingers in my ears and up my nose, so that didn't last long.
There are a lot of interesting tanks that you won't see at other aquariums, but without a doubt, the most amazing exhibit is the 1.2 million gallon Outer Bay tank. Enzo stood in awe as all his favorites swam by - hammerheads, white sharks, turtles, massive tuna, mahi mahi, and sting rays. But the biggest thrill was the mola mola fish. I think it's the only aquarium that has one, and Enzo couldn't believe it. He'd seen it on his Planet Earth DVD, so knew it right away. "Mola mola fish!", he squealed. Then he started running back and forth along the face of the huge tank, pointing out all the fish. "Mommy daddy, come quick! Look!"
We worked our way around the rest of the aquarium, and stopped to play in the kids area to play in the water and take pictures in the giant clam, before both kids started to fade a little. We piled them into the truck, and we went on the 17 Mile Drive, while they slept. At one point, Enzo woke up to tell Zoe, who was driving, "mommy too many bumps".
Back at the hotel, Enzo and Sophie played with toys, ate some snacks, and discussed the aquarium before Kala and Sophie headed back up to SF. "One shark swam by Enzo", Enzo remembered. We took Enzo out to get a pizza, and then came back to the hotel. Enzo took a shower with daddy for the first time. He had mixed feelings about the "rain". After our shower, Enzo quickly taught himself how to climb in and out of the little pack-n-play in our room. So shortly after putting him to sleep, he was standing next our our bed asking to climb up. Enzo rolled and trashed and kicked and flopped around for an hour, then right before he fell asleep, he sat up and said in low whisper, "someone there at front door. look, someone there". Kinda freaked us out.
