safety dance

When I got home from work, Enzo was really upset and asking for mommy. Apparently just a few minutes earlier, Enzo thought he heard the garage door open. When he discovered mommy wasn't home, he started to cry. it actually took a long time to calm him down. Almost an hour before he really was fine.

After a quick dinner of soup, we went to the kids concert in Old Pas. We sat with William and his family the whole time. Enzo was clingy and shy at first but then opened a little and then he went crazy. He and William were running loose through the crowd, and then circling around to jump on my back. The theme if the night was Safety, so there were firetrucks parked all over. As Enzo ran through the crowd at dusk, I thought to myself, I cannot lose my kid on child safety awareness night. Before we left, a policewoman finger printed the boys.

Enzo was wiped out when we got home. He ate a snack and then begged to skip bath. We didn't skip bath. right before falling asleep, he asked to go to the potty. Good thing too cause it would been a long night with that in his diaper.

Nanny Note: We went to the toy store to buy a box of crayons and a car. When we got home we colored and made paper airplanes. We experimented with who could go farther...superman or paper airplane. After nap, we watched Bugs Life for a bit then went to play at Gymboree.

vio lin lin lin

Zoe was home early from work, and gave Enzo the violin that just arrived in the mail. He was stoked about it. It's actually a real wooden violin with a horsehair bow. It took us a while to figure out how to get it to produce sound. Sort of complicated preparation.

Zoe made lentil soup in the slow cooker, and Enzo loved it. During dinner he told us a complicated story, most of which I've forgotten, about sharks in the sky and angler fish that he caught and a baby mouse that lives in the bushes. There actually was some thread to the story when he told it. After dinner, we went for our walk down the block. We bumped into William, and the two of them went bananas - running through the bushes and rolling down the hill next door.

It took a while to calm him down when we got home, but when he finally laid down and relaxed, he was out in about a minute.

Nanny Note: We went to Kidspace and ran into Wes and Eric. At home we watched Open Ocean then went to bed. After nap we went to the toy store.

August 24, 2008

one two firetrucks

A great weekend with Enzo. On Saturday, we got out of the house early and went to the aquarium in Long Beach. As we were pulling into the parking lot, Enzo said "Going to see the manta rays. They're my buddies. Haven't seen them in a long time." He ran straight through the first floor exhibits to get to the shark and ray touch tank. We spent about 30 minutes there manhandling elasmobranchs before heading up the the second level to poke anemones and starfish.

We stopped in front of the otter tank for an snack and juice box, and the rush of sugar made Enzo crazy. He was running all around yelling "weehooo!" trying to find the Nemo tank. He got a blue whale and a diverman in the gift shop and played with them all the way home.

He didn't take a nap, so after a bite to eat, we went out to the Lego store to buy some birthday presents for his friends. So of course we picked up a few things for Enzer too. He already has some of the big baby Legos, but we got him some regular small Legos. He loved them, and we sat playing for an hour at the dinner table. Mommy and Enzo made up a song about how slow daddy built a lego dump truck.

Today, we had two birthday parties - one for Chloe a friend of his from Waldorf School, and another for Gabe. Enzo had fun at Chloes house exploring the new territory, and seeing some friends he hasnt seen recently. At Gabe's, Enzo bounced in the castle and helped knock down a pinata. The fire department stopped by with a big truck too. The fireman ate lunch and then let the kids climb in the truck. When I finally put Enzo in the truck (after 30 minutes of asking me too), he said "there you go!"

Back for another failed nap, and then to the Whole Foods. I noticed Enzo could barely keep his head up, so I carried him. He put his head on my shoulder, and slept for about 30 minutes as we shopped. He was super duper grouchy when I woke him up back at the car, but quickly snapped out of it.

We spent the rest of the day playing with little Legos and walking around the neighborhood. Enzo bumped in to Wes and then later, William. Enzo ate a huge plate of mommy's pasta, and then we played with legos. Remarkably, someone reported a fire in our neighborhood, and a huge firetruck parked right in front of our house. Enzo couldnt believe it, and I'm sure thought they came by to say hi to him. There was no fire, so Enzo went out to get a sticker badge and some high fives. They got a call as we were talking to them, so they jumped in the truck, flipped on the lights and siren and sped off right in front of us. Blew Enzo's mind.

Not surprisingly, it was a little bit of a struggle getting him to sleep tonight. But once he finally decided he was ready to sleep, he was out within a minute.

burrito

After work today, we took Enzo out to pick up the dogs and grab Friday night burritos. The woman at the counter actually understood that their standard giant 3 lb burrito wasn't what I wanted for Enzo. He got a nice sized one, and ate all the way home in the back seat.

Jack was driving his ATV up he street when we got home, so off Enzo went down the block. Enzo and Jack ran around in the yard on the corner. I can tell they both want to just duke it out, wrestle, and hit each other with sticks (all in good fun), but we never let them get in to it. Enzo got upset when I took his stick away. He threw it on the ground, somehow poking himself right in the eye. We walked back home crying, but recovered soon.

It was getting very late, so we watched a little Milo & Otis, before bath and bed.

August 21, 2008

surprises everyday

After work today, Enzo and I went to the farmers market for dinner. He managed to eat some hot dog and fries in between running all around. He sat for a minute to watch some high school kids play music, but then was off again. We shared a shave ice, and then went to the park to burn off some energy.

We ran and climbed and slid, and then laid on the slide looking up at the "beautiful sky". We talked under the slide, "hi daddy, whatchu doing today?" and then ran down the storm gutter to the car.

We got back home pretty late but Enzo was hungry so we ate a snack before bath. He went willingly into bath and bed. After his milk, he asked to use the potty. Because we often give him surprises or treats when he uses the potty, he's pretty much come to expect it. Tonight he said, "where's my surprise? i use the potty every day. i get a surprise every day". Fair enough. He got a surprise.

garage

Back in the groove today. Everyone up and getting for work and play. Before Alex came, I drew dem bones all over Enzo with his new body crayons. He was thrilled, and couldn't wait to show Alex. Enzo was happy to see her, after a week away. They played at home in the morning, and then went out to Garfield Park in the afternoon.

Enzo seemed over his grumpiness from yesterday despite being awake from about midnight to 2AM last night. He took a monster nap, and was super high energy when I took over at about 5:30. We spent some time admiring the new garage door, and watched it go up and down about ten times.

We had dinner-wrestling in the living room, and then after a brief timeout for some flying pasta, we settled in for a bit of Charlotte's Web. He spoke with Zoe on the phone about his day. Before bath, we went for a walk at dusk. Enzo kept asking me to "make it bright", knowing the darker it got, the closer to bedtime he was.

August 17, 2008

new outlook

As he has been for the last few nights, Enzo woke up around 3AM asking for milk, and saying that he was hungry. Zoe curled up with him, and he was back to sleep soon.

We spent our morning hanging around the house munching on croissants, playing with legos, and watching Milo & Otis. We tried taking Enzo to the park before meeting Elijah for lunch, but Enzo didn't last long there. He was determined to be grouchy and that was that. He couldnt sit in his seat at lunch, so I brought him out to the car to wait for Zoe to finish.

Back home, we all laid down for what turned out to be a three hour nap! We all woke up with a "new outlook on the day". We went for a walk, played in the living room, and vegged out to some Bee Movie. Enzo ate a good dinner, and while mommy ran to the grocery store, Enzo and daddy danced around the living room. Enzo wanted to go for a walk in the dark, so we went down the block. He noticed that it was more quiet at night, so he whispered the whole way, and held my hand. He liked the stars and the blinking lights of a passing airplane.

We had a bath when Zoe came home, and after some milk and a story, Enzo fell quietly asleep.

August 09, 2008

grampa buzz

Grampa Buzz came into town late Wed night to help us do some work on the house in prep for Emi's arrival. Enzo took to him right away. First thing Thursday morning, Enzo gave Buzz a tour of the new guest room, which included the "brand new bed" and a new fan. Enzo pointed out that the bed was "snuggly". He dragged Buzz into the living room to play his "dry bones" puzzle, and to show off various toys.

After returning from getting the truck and some lumber, we spent some time cleaning up the garage. Enzo and Alex watched for a while, and then went out to Kidspace. When Zoe got home, we ordered a pizza and had a front yard picnic. Enzo wouldnt go to sleep that night without going downstairs to say goodnight to Grampa Buzz.

First thing Friday morning, Enzo asked to go downstairs to see Grampa Buzz. He spent the day with Alex while we worked in the garage. At about 6PM, I drove Enzo and Buzz out to pick up the dogs, and grab a burrito for dinner. Zoe made it home just in time to help put Enzo to bed.

Today, Enzo and mommy spent most of the day together while Buzz and I went out for supplies and worked in the garage. They popped their head in occasionally, and Enzo sat in high chair watching for a while too. Enzo and Zoe played in the pool, went on a few walks, ate snacks, drank juice, took a nap, sat in the car in the driveway, and watched Milo & Otis. Enzo was in good mood for most of the day, but occasionally got a little aggravated that he couldn't participate more with the construction work.

We went out for sushi tonight. We went late, and Enzo was really hungry. He devoured his egg sushi and some tempura shrimp. On the way home, we stopped by the park to chase Enzo up and burn off some energy. He was fearless down the slide, and came close to hurting himself many times. After a bite of ice cream and a long bath, Enzo was ready to sleep.

August 06, 2008

twitch

Alex had the morning off and Zoe was up and out early, so Enzo and I went to Cindy's for breakfast, and then came back home to goof around. Zoe came home after her OR case, and we took Enzo to swim class.

He was not in to being part of the class today, just wanting to climb on the steps, play with toys, and jump off the edge of the pool. He was having fun, but seemed tired and was a bit unruly, so we left a little early. Alex met us at home, and put him down for a nap soon after.

Nanny Note: We made dem bones puzzle on the floor and watched dem bones video. I read him a toy Story book and he went to sleep.

Enzo got very upset when Zoe left to back to the hospital for an overnight call, but had recovered by the time I got home from work. We had a really easy and fun night. We ate leftovers, then walked down the block, then played with trains. Enzo spotted the two old ladies from the two houses next door, and asked to go out and talk to them. He proceeded to put on a little Twitch dance routine n the driveway that went on for about 10 minutes. We watched some angler fish right before bed to ensure that he'd have a nightmare and wake me up in the middle of the night.

August 05, 2008

grizzly salad

We had a nice family snuggy in bed this morning before we started our day. Daddy took Enzo and the dogs to the Rosebowl to throw the ball around. They had just mowed the lawn there and it was covered in piles of lawn clippings. At first we pretended that were big bears eating salad for breakfast, but it pretty quickly turned into a salad fight. Enzo took great delight in throwing fist fulls of grass clippings at me.

Nanny Note: We walked around the block then went to visit Wesley. They painted and worked in the yard and played with Nacho. At our swim lesson Enzo wanted to just take off. He was so comfortable and brave. We practiced holding on to the side of the pool and he just stuck like glue. After swim lesson we watched Toy Story then took a nap. After nap we went to kidspace.

Enzo got home after mommy did and was in a fine mood, and very talkative about his day. "went swimming! fought with Wesley over the rake! I didn't cry! Wesley cried!" He and mommy watched the Pasadena police put up a speed meter in front of the house to determine when best to send a cop car out to our street to catch the most speeders. They took a walk and hung out with Jack and met daddy again on his way home.

He ate a huge dinner then we took another walk and rolled down Linda's hill over and over again. We tried again to practice blowing bubbles in the tub but instead he drank a bit of bathwater.

We played around in his room a bit before milk books then bed

August 04, 2008

swimmy

Enzo slept through the night, and woke up bright and early in a chipper mood. We played with him downstairs until it was time for Zoe to head off to work.

Later in the morning, I met Alex and Enzo at the PCC pool for Enzo's first swim class. He was pretty serious and I think a little nervous about the big pool. But he loosened up quickly, and was soon saying "i want to swim by myself!" He couldn't quite master the first lesson which was blowing bubbles. He tends to breath in rather than out. He got a few mouthfuls and lungfuls of water. He dunked his head under once by himself, and came up shocked and laughing. He got pretty good at kicking his chubby little legs, which proved to be a great source of buoyancy. He was sad to leave the pool, but happy to hear that he'd be back the next day.

Nanny Note: We watched Blue Planet then went to swim class. After class we had lunch and watched Blue Planet again. At nap time we read stories. After nap, we went for a walk around the neighborhood. Enzo found a "sleeping" bee and inspected it for about 30 minutes, amazed at how "cute" it was.

Zoe and Enzo were at the corner down the block when I came driving by. I pulled over and Enzo ran to the car, "daddy! daddy!" We walked back up the street and got in the car to go run some errands. Enzo rode in the cart at Costco, and ate a one dollar hot dog for dinner.

He practiced blowing bubbles in the bath, and used the potty before bed time stories. He flopped around for half an hour before finally drifting off.

August 03, 2008

i need to go home

Mommy left her yeasty waffle mix to rise overnight, and we had a big Sunday morning breakfast, our first in a while. After breakfast, we started working on the house again. I took Enzo to the park to get him out from underfoot while Zoe continued to clean.

We had fun at the park. Enzo has become fearless in the last few months about climbing, sliding, and jumping. And he was all over the place this morning. About 20 minutes in, Enzo suddenly stopped, turned to me, and said with a very serious tone, "i need to go home". I asked if he needed to use the potty, and he said yes. So we ran back to the car. I told him big boys hold it until they get, and asked him to try. He said he would, and then sat quietly focused in the back seat. We made it home, and he rushed into the bathroom. He made it! Mommy rewarded him with a little lego truck that she was waiting to give him as a reward for something. And that was a big deal, so he got it.

Enzo wanted to go back outside to play in daddy's car, and we ended up sitting out there for almost an hour. Just talking and listening to Beck ("louder! louder!"), and playing hide and go seek with a handful of little toy animals.

Soon after, Enzo was down for his nap, and we finished putting together a bed for the guest room. We showed it to Enzo when he woke up, and told him it was for Grampa Buzz. He said, "no! it's for me!"

We ran some errands, stopping by Pottery Barn kids for a couple things for his room, and then to the grocery store. Enzo satin the cart playing his trumpet. I got him a sample of Pirate Booty to much on, and Zoe taught his to pronounce it "bootay"

Back home, we ate a nice salmon pasta dinner, went for a walk, and then played outside in the front yard. Enzo sat in his brand new Adirondack chair and used daddy as a launching pad to fly "to infinity and beyond!". Enzo was a little nuts tonight, but finally fell asleep around 9PM.

August 02, 2008

making me crazy

Enzo woke up in a happy mood and spent a long time reading and playing with mommy in his room. He cried again while she read "Kitten's first full moon" during the part that kitten falls in the pond. When we asked him why he was crying, he answered, "because kitten is sad and wet and scared!" He got over it pretty quickly once he saw that kitten had a bowl of milk waiting for him at home.

We had a fun breakfast at Cindy's then headed back home. We started rearranging our house in order to accommodate little Emi and moved a bunch of stuff into his room. He had fun getting in the way. Daddy revived his train set on the living room floor and he had a great time playing with that again.

Enzo and mommy played with his sticky foam balls that Alex got for him then they shared a slice of birthday cake. We took a nice family nap then woke up and did more house arranging. He got upset at us because we were scolding him so much - he was getting into absolutely everything - and he turned to us and said, "well you're making me crazy!"

We had pizza delivered for dinner and Enzo sat at the window waiting for the delivery guy. We had our picnic outside, and afterwards he asked to go to the park so we went and ran him around until he told us he was hot and thirsty. So we went back home and straight into the bath, then books and bed without an argument.

August 01, 2008

ice pack

When Zoe left for work, Enzo and I took the pups to ddc, and stopped for breakfast before school. Today was the last day of the PO summer class.

Enzo had a great day. We had a big pot luck snack, and Enzo liked sitting with me while he ate. About half way through class, he tripped and hit his head on the door jam. It left a big mark. Miss Cheri gave him an ice pack to hold on his head, and he made a point of telling everyone that he felt better and the his owie was gone.

He spent some time playing with another boy in class today. They were wearing fire chief hats, running around yelling about a fire they needed to put out. He gave the teachers hugs on the way out, and said bye bye. When we got into the very hot car, he asked me to turn on the "conditioning".

Nanny Note: We had a small lunch, watched Blue Planet, read some books and took a nice long nap. After nap, we visited with the fish and watched Blue Planet again. We went to Angel's to get some foam and when we got home we played with it. Enzo really like it.

Zoe was held up in the OR, so Enzo and I went to get the dogs and grab a burrito. Back home, we were having a nice night, until we went out for a walk at about 7. Enzo ran down the driveway, took a sharp turn, and hit his knee on the corner of the brick wall. He took a nasty fall down onto the sidewalk. Scrapped knee and elbow, and hit his head on the concrete. Back inside, we sat on the couch, trying to calm down. I gave him an ice pack. Through his tears, he said "just like at school".

About 30 minutes later, we went back out for a short walk, then home for bath and bed.
